SaintGoogle and list,
Installing MCL in Vista is a frustrating exercise for anyone who
hasn't been exposed to Vista's User Account Control. Some of us who
have
several favorite older programs like MCL are getting so jaded that we
are tempted to click yes anytime we see a UAC dialog
box. I believe that Microsoft has gone overboard with their draconian
approach. That said, I don't believe one should
indiscriminately kick out the fence slats. I've spent many hours
repairing damage caused by malware which this is supposed to
prevent. I just hope that we are approaching some reasonable
middlegound between a lawless wild west and totalitarian control.
Starting with Vista winhelp32.exe will no longer be shipped with
Windows but it is available at Microsfot for download. (see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607)
You can also copy winhlp32.exe from any XP machine. Be sure you get
the latest version 5.1.2600.2180 (277 KB (283,648 bytes)).
Delete or rename the winhlp32.exe stub (9.00 KB (9,216 bytes)) before
you copy/move winhlp32.exe into C:\Windows.
If you haven't already set MCL.exe Compatability Properties, do so
now. In Windows Explorer, right click on MCL.exe, select
Properties > Compatability. Select Run this program in compatability
mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and Run this program
as Administrator.
Enjoy (only a masochist would say that now)
