i am a ML user from China and i've been loaded the ML firmware on my
5D2 for quite a long time, the high bit rate and rack focus are very
useful and really help me a lot both in video shooting and the edit
process. i am a university student major in movie, and many of my
classmates is now using ML under my suggestions.
but it has been a huge problem that the professional English terms on
the ML menu and the user guide are extremely difficult for Chinese
users, they can not use most of the functions because of the language,
it's a big limitation for ML in china. So I translate the whole
firmware and user guide doc. into Chinese and explain all the terms to
my classmates in Chinese, I've been tried this for a long time and now
i think my Chinese version is mature and understandable for most
Chinese users of ML.so i am thinking that if there is a way of really
adding Chinese to the firmware file, cause for the Chinese users, the
original firmware of Canon is in Chinese, so i think the ML Chinese
version will certainly meet a lot of needs and will sure allow more
Chinese users to use ML on their EOS camera

is my english understandable? i am afraid i didn't explain myself
clearly T_T, ML does have a large group of users in China, but the
language is really a big problem, so i am thinking about solving this
problem, does anyone has any idea about how to add Chinese in the
firmware file?

Adding Chinese characters would be a bit hard imho (it would mean adding
utf-8, GB, CJK, Big5 support or similar).
Translating the on-line user guide to chinese is much easier, as they
are actually only bmp files, made with latex.

Sounds like an excellent idea! I can understand that generic
photographic terminology that's in English would be hard to translate.
If you can work out basic Mandarin translations then that would be
great! It would be very beneficial if you could also some time do a
beginner's guide to ML in Mandarin and post it somewhere like vimeo or
youtube as I have a couple of Chinese friends I'd like to show the
video to. As for which UTF-8 I would assume BIG5 would be best right?
I see this is generally a standard for subtitles in Mandarin for
English speaking films..

Your English is exceptional. You're not the only ML user where English
is not their native language, so relax! :) Thanks for this post,
friend.

actually i have made a word file already for the whole translation of
the official user guide of ML, and some of my classmates are using it
and correcting some mistakes and helping me with some words that i
cant express very clear or accurate, and we are planning for a second
version of Chinese translation. i think utf-8 may be the best choice
because it supports Simplified Chinese, what i find the most difficult
is that i am not quite familiar with the process of adding a new
language to the firmware itself and make it displays correctly on the
camera, do i need to add another file to my CF card or i can rewrite
the program? so i may need some professional help to do the job~~and
we are also planning for a detailed user guide with plenty of test
shot and test video in Chinese, to explain every function and every
setting of ML, maybe when we finish that i can publish it on some
video website and you can show your friends~

anyway really thank you for replying~

agree. I am a senior high school student (師大附中) who use ML for video almost every week. Although I am getting used to the English menu, I think it will be great to have Chinese version.

I want to give it a try.

need some patch make it work ?

You don't need to use find_fnt, the fonts were already found and are being used in current ML code.

But Canon font is quite a bit larger than ML one, so it will probably break the layout.

Also, I'm not sure if there are all the characters you need. For Japanese it looks like there is a small subset for kanji (only what Canon actually used in their menu), but at least hiragana/katakana seem complete. I don't know how it's in Chinese.

I run some test and very few char which canon used in the firmware can
be display
Maybe , as Alex said, it's just a small subset

There are some small fonts like 12x12 pixels, which takes 18 bytes per
char. The smallest font I can remember is about 10x10.

The task needs a translation program to pick the characters needed out
and making a smaller font library.

If I finish my current task, maybe I can take a look into this problem.
