Blood is essential for us to live. It is priceless - it cannot be
bought. YOU are the one who has been entrusted with the responsibility
of giving blood and, in the end, it might be YOU who may need to
receive it. Blood saves lives.
An adult person has a total blood volume of about 5 to 6 litres. When
one donates blood, he or she is giving only about 450ml - less than 8%
of one's total blood volume (and also less than a pint … how long did
it take you to down that pint of beer last Saturday?).
3 components can be extracted from a bag of blood:
a) Red Blood Cells (cells required to transport oxygen to the body's tissues)
b) Platelets (small fragments of cells needed for wound healing)
c) Plasma (the liquid component of blood)
This means that 3 people can benefit from one donor!
There are other health benefits for the donor as well!
- Reduction in risk of heart disease (especially in men).
- Enhance the production of new Red Blood Cells.
- Burns calories.
- A basic blood test is done.
- A feeling of worthiness.
Before donating blood, you must prepare yourself by drinking a lot of
water and avoiding fatty foods. To ensure that you are healthy enough
to donate, a doctor will perform a general check-up, and your
haemoglobin level will be checked, before you donate blood.
We hope to see you on the 28th or 29th of October at the Blood Mobile
Unit near Gateway Carpark to donate blood. Don’t forget to get your
I.D. Card with you!
Please don’t leave it up to someone else.
