The largest airline involved in transport US soldiers through Ireland
is reportedly planning to pull out of Shannon Airport next month.

Reports this morning said World Airways was planning to make all
refuelling stops in the German city of Liepzig from July 1st.

The move will be welcomed by peace activists who have been campaigning
for years for the Government to ban US military flights from Shannon.

However, it will be a disappointment for local business interests as it
will reportedly result in the loss of three flights carrying 750 US
military personnel every day.

Shannon is believed to have earned around €100m by facilitating
hundreds of US military flights since the beginning of the ongoing wars
in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The largest carrier of US military personnel through Shannon is set to
pull out of the airport next month and move its military technical
stops to Germany.

World Airways has confirmed that from 1 July it will use Leipzig in
Germany as its primary technical stop for US military flights.

The move is expected to result in the loss on average of three flights
and 750 troops a day at Shannon where 330,000 military personnel
stopped over in 2005 alone.

While it is not known how much Shannon stands to lose as a result of
the pull out, it is believed that the airport earned an estimated
€14m during the first three months of this year.
