it's looking at yourself in the mirror.

your true self.

unguarded.

with no pretensions whatsoever.

...

yes, it's taking a good hard stare.

for those few moments...

it's making a totally honest assessment of who and what you see.

because, after all of these years, there you are.

it's taking a profoundly sincere gaze at the serious side of yourself.

(while intermittently posing for magazine covers).

writer of the year!

voice of a generation!

etc..

and then the lights go out as the electric company disconnects
service.

I agree, but with one serious exception.

Whatever you do, if you've been eating mushrooms,
you know the kind that come up in the cow pasture
after a spring rain...
