You'll notice it is a site that links to a number of different careers.
What you won't notice, which I did, was that even though each career
description looks as though it's an article, the doctor, musician,
teacher, veterinarian, writer, and computer programmer, are all books I
wrote and my text on the site verbatim. If you click one, at the bottom
of the page it says "About the Author," and my bio is in there.
This bugs me. I never gave anyone permission to lift copy from my books
and publish it elsewhere, especially a site with the word "university"
in the URL when these books are for 5th graders.
Any thoughts?

Ye olde swarm of links: thousands of links for writers, researchers and
the terminally curious <http://writers.internet-resources.com>
Thanks, Sal. I already wrote to my publisher so I think I should wait to
see what I find out first.

You are being given credit for your work, are you not? It just sounds
like their quoting is sloppy and their interpretation of fair-use is
marginal. If this so-called "university" is using your books, you
might consider finding some method of promoting it. You do get
royalties, right?
Oh wait, you have publicized it... does that constitute promotion?
And of course now that you have publicly announced your awareness of
it, if you don't immediately hire a lawyer and sue them to stop
whatever you don't like about what they're doing, that can be
construed as your granting them tacit permission to continue.
Aren't you glad you asked? <g>

No. I work under contract (separate for each book) on a fixed-fee basis.
No royalties.

My publisher has promoted it. That doesn't give anyone permission to
reprint it verbatim. In fact, I dug through their site and it says
something like, "Everything we publish on this site is in the public
domain," which is a load of BS. My books are in print, bound,
copyrighted, sold to libraries and schools, and is *not* in the public
domain.

Yes. The comments have been interesting, which is what I expected when I
posted. As I mentioned to Sal, I'm just going to leave it in my
publisher's hands.

why would you care if you don't get any royalties?
it's actually to your advantage to have your stuff published more
widely in that case.
