So, I've entered a writing contest. Never thought I'd do it, but it made
sense to use it as an excuse to write this week's column.

Here's my contest for you (with no prize, sorry) -- if you don't mind,
read my column and try to guess what the contest was... that is, what
were the questions I was supposed to be answering? What were the
guidelines, do you think?

I sure would appreciate getting some idea if I even came close to the
mark.

And, I swear, this is NOT just a ploy to tell you about my
column/website. And, it's not a request for a critique of my writing,
really.

Shoot.

I guess it is sort of a request for feedback and that doesn't belong
here.

Let me ask a question/make a comment about writing that I believe does
belong here. This morning I was thinking about how I respond to
assignments in creative writing or painting. In both situations I find
myself zooming in on something so close, I feel like I've gone inside.
Pictures I paint of still life displays end up looking like abstract
work rather than "a picture of a flower in a vase." The abstract nature
doesn't necessarily work since I have not mastered the techniques of
making it "look like a flower in a vase."

I'm wondering if I have the same problem in my writing. I zoom in so
fast without mastering the technique of painting a complete picture.

That's what I'm wondering about with my contest entry -- I'm trying to
figure out if I went too far inside my idea.

:-)
Heather

Regarding my original post (see below), about my column titled
"'Contemplation' and 'Precision'" that's now in my website's archives:

Only one person guessed in my guestbook and only a couple friends/family
tried to guess. I still want to know if anyone has any idea what the
contest was, but, now I'll tell you.

The contest was asking for us to write about "fun." Tips about how we have
fun. I think, now, I should've been a lot more literal and obvious.
