The important thing to remember about this
new breed of artists was their emotional
involvement with themselves as artists. They
threw the old ideas of representationalism
out of the window. Where they had windows,
obviously. They painted how they felt about
what they saw. Sometimes this meant painting
curvy, lively, brilliant swirls of colour, as if a
curvy, lively and brilliantly coloured object had
the effect on them of making them feel curvy,
lively and brilliantly coloured objects were only
curvy, lively and brilliantly coloured. This was
what eventually got them recognition, the way in
which they were able to convey an idea about
themselves in paintings about fields and flowers.
Naturalism was over.
Your header called to me.
Somebody once told me that we don't ever really get rid of things in
our lives, we just add new layers. That seems truer than most
observations.
I'm pretty sure that works in art, too. We may have moved on from
naturalism, but it's still there, sometimes on the surface, sometimes
only in memory.
Christine
Odd, it was calling to really really dumb dummies.
Still, as you're here.

Ooooh! I know this one! That's where Tony falls for Maria at the high
school dance.
Tony: Go play games with the Impressionists.
Riff: Why not? They're the greatest. Ain't they?
Tony: Were.
Riff: You found somethin' better?
Tony: Not yet, but... every single night for the last month... l wake
up, and l'm reachin' out my paint brush.
Riff: Well, for what?
Tony: l don't know. lt's right outside the door, just around the
corner...
Riff: What is?
Tony: l don't know. lt's like the kick l used to get from bein' an
Impressionist.
Riff: Well, now you're talkin'. Man, without an artist's gang, you're
an orphan.
Tony: Riff, l've had it with Impressionism. [1]
