"Amazing" but embarrassing

I went to a genealogy meeting last night and was greeted by a guy who
had just read COMRADES, AVENGE US.
"It's amazing," he gushed. "You're writing about all those places I was
in when I was in the Army: Cividale, Udine, Gorizia, Trieste."
His wife, standing next to him, said, "He took me over there on a trip,
but we avoided all those places."
I told him that there's even more about northeast Italy in THE TENTH
PRAYER and urged him to go out and buy a copy.
Later, he told the entire room about the "amazing fact that I had
written about all those places where he'd been."
To be honest, I found it embarrassing.

What an odd thing to say, in the middle of a self-plug cross-posted to
three groups.

Well, at least my posting was about writing, not about Tim McVay or Dubya,
or a movie or some other off-topic thing.
Whether you like it or not, I was both pleased and embarrassed by this man's
enthusiasm.

And you know misc.writing well enough to realise that those postings are an
accepted norm here.

If you want to post a yahoo, post a yahoo.

Posting a veiled yahoo is always gonna get you hit, I reckon.

Actually your posting was about you. Nothing wrong with that, except it's a
dishonor to deny it.

I for one love to have announcements of ng contributor's works. Sometimes
saves me a lot of work tracking down titles of works in areas I enjoy.

So, fwiw, I hope the practice continues.

I don't mind the announcements, themselves. When they're of interest, I'm
appreciative; when they're not, I ignore them. What torques me are the
protestations of false modesty. I mean, how embarrassed could the original
poster have been, to trumpet his "embarrassment" across three newsgroups?
Simple amazement I would have understood, but embarrassment? I don't know
about you, but if something embarrasses me, I don't willingly trumpet it all
over the internet; after all, people I actually know read these posts.

As my original posting said, this guy went on and on about how my book had
brought back memories of his military service in WW II. This was at a meeting
of a genealogical society.
His endless "Gee whiz" and "Oh golly" remarks were embarrassing.

Don't be embarrassed for him. You know how people who love geneological
lists are, it doesn't have to be well written for them to enjoy it. I'm
sure he was aware it had no literary merit, but was just lonely and needed
a pal.
