I posted a message about an email I received from Audrey Kelly at Fade In:
regarding a memo I had posted to Moviebytes about Joann never receiving her
prize money. Audrey accused me of slander and claimed that

"Fade In co-sponsors this contest with other companies and it has nothing to do
with the Writers Network competition. The Writers Network Competition is not
advertised in, or as being in any way affiliated with, Fade In: magazine and/or
the Fade In: Awards."

I see that I did in fact post my memo about Joann under the Fade In: contest
listing, rather than the Writers Network listing. Oops.

However, Audrey is being less than truthful and I'm not sure why. She is
listed as the program coordinator for the Writers Network contest and is also
the Editor in Chief of Fade In:. I'd say that constitutes a connection since
she runs both organizations!

Regarding the issue of Joann's prize money, a memo on the Writers Network
Competition from Audrey states that Joann was, in fact, a finalist, but did not
receive her money as she had had a previous option which she had not disclosed,
thereby disqualifying her. Fair enough. I don't know why she (Audrey) didn't
tell it like it was in the first place, rather than accusing me of slander. In
fact, my statement was factual, that Joann had never received the money, and
therefore not slanderous.

Everyone in Hollywood thinks they're a lawyer.

Not to mention the fact that the Writer's Network and Fade In have the same
mailing address.

I have never heard anything about this at all. Instead of supplying any reason
for not giving me my money, they simply chose to ignore my phone calls and
emails. If I was "disqualified," it would have been nice for them to tell me.

I just reviewed the complete rules and application for the competition and saw
no reference to any qualification based on the fact that the writer had
previously been optioned. The script I submitted was not under option when I
submitted it.

As far as Audrey's other claims, which I recently read on moviebytes (thanks
for steering me toward that memo), I supplied my forwarding address to her
secretary no less than twice. And I received my script with notes written on
it about 9 months after I had won the competition. The package with the script
in it enclosed no cover letter, and certainly no instructions that I was to
resubmit the script having incorprated their notes in order to get my work
passed on to agents.

Audrey and I have gone back and forth a couple of times but it isn't really my
battle even though it really steams me. You should forward this to her.

I sent her an email yesterday that basically says about the same thing,
refuting her posting on moviebytes point by point. I doubt she will respond,
though. She's never answered my emails before.

I'd be interested to know if she does.
