I'm looking for a map of all L.A. area rail lines, of all types. Purpose: To
try to identify potential Metrolink routes.

One in particular: North Orange County to Huntington Beach. The track exists
and has little use.

Second, there is no service from Orange County to Long Beach or Torrance. I
think such a line would see a lot of use.

I tried Google, couldn't find anything.

The Metrolink service runs on most of the active rail lines in OC. The
abandoned PE
streetcar system had portions bought up by public agencies.

Many mapping sites show the existing freight railroad corridors. For
instance, many railroads are clearly shown on Google Maps. One
problem might be that to clearly see the railroads you may have to
zoom in and not be able to get a regional view of the rail system.

I've been quite happy with Google Earth for that. It's got virtually
every rail line out there, and they can be seen while zoomed out quite
far, unlike any of the web mapping sites I've tried. You can even find
abandoned lines when zoomed in enough. The key is to turn off all of
the "layers" that you don't need, which often make it difficult to see
the rail lines, particularly roads.

I assume the example you're using is the line that extends south from
Stanton to Ellis Ave, about a half-mile west of and parallel to CA-39?

Thanks. I'll give it a try. I was hoping there would be a simple jpeg map
somewhere that displayed freeways and freight rail lines....

Yes, that is the line. I think it would be great for a Metrolink line.

There is no north/south freeway to Huntington Beach. I have an old Thomas
Guide that shows a proposed freeway near Beach Blvd., but that was
cancelled.

Try the route 57 "Newport Freeway". Completed many years ago, but I
don't know how old your map is.

Say you're at Beach and Garfield and your destination is Beach and
Westminster. Would you really want to cut over to the 57? Would the time
saved on the the 57 be more than the time it takes to get to and from Beach
Blvd?
