I am a 46 year old female considering a career change from the
business world to the world of truck driving. It's something I've
always wanted to do but couldn't due to family constraints. However,
the kids have all been shoved out of the nest and it's my time again
to do whatever I'd like :) I'll be honest - I am not physically
strong but I am almost 6 feet tall and physically fit.
(a) For training, what's the best way to go about the process?
Training with the big freight companies or with a private school?
(b) For newbies, what are your recommendations as to which company to
hire on with? Swift looks as though they would be a good bet for
someone starting out but what do the experienced members of this group
say?
(c) I don't have any felonies, misdemeanors, DUIs, drugs, accidents,
or insurance claims. I do have a couple of traffic tickets - one for
speeding two years ago and the other for obstructing traffic here a
couple of months ago when I was helping an elderly relative to get
into the car at the airport. Would these tickets prevent me from being
hired on?
I would appreciate any and all information posted here. I can already
drive an 18 wheeler standard transmission by the way - no problem
there. I don't see too many female truckers on the road but I know
they are out there. Major pitfalls of being a female trucker? TIA.
Sounds like you might want to try a Van or a Tanker first. They don't
require you to be in shape at all.
Trucking is a lot of long days and most people have to suffer through 2
years of OTR before they can move into a local job and then local jobs
normally pay squat.
After my 2 years as an OTR I went regional so I'm always less than 300 miles
from home and most the time it is just like having a "local" job anyway.
Word of caution. It is getting harder and harder to find any parking at
night. The number of trucks on the road keeps going up and the number of
places to park them doesn't seem to change much.
.
> (a) For training, what's the best way to go about the process?

Hard to answer that. About all I can do is tell you what I tried. I went
with a Junior College mainly so I wouldn't have to stay with my first
company a full year to pay them back.
Turns out the first company I went to work for in 2003 now forces you to
stay with them a full year or they take what they paid you for their flatbed
training back.

From my experience, the people in the office want to treat you like a truck
driver. Let them. If you know about computers do not let them know. Long
story.

I've seen people with 2 DUIs get a truck driving job. They might also be
looking at how long you have stayed at previous jobs too.

Some female drivers are constantly harassed by the male drivers. Sometimes
all the male driver wants is to see their face.
Some female drivers don't use the CB much and others seem to use the CB and
try and reel the guys in.
I guess that is pretty standard, even for bars right?
Word of caution on this newsgroup. It has been one big flame-war for years
so be careful of what anybody says about another poster because it could be
a total or near total fabrication.

http://www.newbiedriver.com is a great website for anyone considering a
trucking career. Get yourself a pot of coffee, because it's a LOT of
reading. I've never ordered or seen the book they sell, but I once
suggested it to another beginning driver and he said later that it was
worth its weight in gold.
I've only driven a bit over a year, so take all of the following thoughts
and opinions with a huge grain of salt:
> (a) For training, what's the best way to go about the process? Training
> with the big freight companies or with a private school?
You *never* want to be under a trucking company's thumb. If you get your
training via the company then you owe them many thousands of dollars if
you quit. That can and probably *will* be used to pressure you into doing
things that are dangerous to you or bad for your career. They will also
give you the worst trips - the ones that involve a lot of dock time you
don't get paid for, and relatively few paying miles - knowing that you
can't afford to quit. Also, most of those trucking-company programs do NOT
give you any kind of training certificate that you can take to other
companies. If you wash out - and about 95% of would-be truckers do in
their first month - you could end up owing $6,000 for a truck-driving
course that would have cost you only $2000 at a private school, and you
can't even use your training to get a job at another company.
So, a private school is the best way to go. There are a lot of federal
grants floating around for people who want to go to truck-driving school.
The school you choose may know how you can get one. You might also ask at
your state employment agency. I did, and was practically mugged and
*thrown* into a trucking school because they had some grants they were
about to lose if they didn't find someone to fill the slots. The grant
even paid for my motel and meals while I was there!
Watch out for so-called "CDL mills". These will get you a CDL cheaply and
with little effort, but their training doesn't meet industry requirements
and you'll find it hard to get a job with any respectable trucking company
(if such a thing exists). Do a websearch for the term and learn how to
recognize a CDL mill.
>
> (b) For newbies, what are your recommendations as to which company to hire

> starting out but what do the experienced members of this group say?
I've only driven for one company, they have a lot of problems, and it goes
against my grain to say bad things about an employer online. So, all I can
do is make a few general statements.
First, you have to be very careful who you believe. Most trucking
companies pay a $1500-$3000 headhunter reward to anyone who sends a new
driver to them. Many drivers will tell you all sorts of lies just to get
that easy money. Generally if someone recommends a company and then wants
your full name, you can't trust their recommendation. And you should
never, ever believe anything a trucking-company recruiter says. I mean
it, they're the biggest liars on Earth.
Second, different people want different things out of trucking and this
affects what they think of the various companies. Also, an experienced
driver may be treated a far sight differently than a first-year rookie.
So, just because experienced drivers like it there, doesn't mean you
will.
All of which makes it rather difficult to select a good company.
Now having said that... I was at Schneider's Houston terminal when I was
investigating trucking jobs. They seemed like one of the best companies
to start with but I didn't care for the big-company atmosphere (no matter
what the job, I like working for small companies where I'm not just
another anonymous cog). However, I remember noticing that quite a few of
the incoming/outgoing trucks were driven by women, for whatever that's
worth. Schneider does have an excellent training program, but remember my
warning about being under a trucking company's thumb. I'd only go that
route if I couldn't possibly manage a private school. Also, maybe I
mis-remember this, but I believe they have a reimbursement program if you
pay for private school out of your own pocket. I think that you also
have to pay the reimbursement back if you leave prematurely so don't
spend it until your year is up.

It might limit your choices some, but I don't think it's the end of the
world. Some of my fellow students in trucking school had recent speeding
tickets and were still able to find jobs. However, it does mean you have
less breathing space to screw up. Despite all the scare-talk they throw
at rookies, most trucking companies will allow a rookie ONE minor screw-up
or ticket. You've already used that so you have no more room for mistakes.
If you get any more tickets, whether in the car or the truck, get yourself
a lawyer. The trucking magazines have a few ads in the back by law
firms who are skilled at trucking cases. They won't get you out of the
fine, but they can usually keep the points off your license. It will cost
you the fine plus about $300-$600 for the lawyer, but it's well worth it
to keep your license clean.
> I would appreciate any and all information posted here. I can already
> drive an 18 wheeler standard transmission by the way - no problem there.
Yeah, but can you back a 53 foot trailer into a tight slot in an unlit lot
designed for 48-footers, in a driving rain at 3:00 AM, with eyes that are
blurry after driving for 11 hours and your brain is still rattling around
from your body being slammed violently around the whole time you drove and
you've spent half the week sleeping at night and the other half sleeping
during the day and you're soooo tired and can't focus on what you're doing
and you have no idea where you'll sleep if you ever get that fricking
trailer backed in because all the truckstops you passed are full but
you're totally out of hours and it's illegal to be on the road now but the
customer says no sleeping in their lot.....
Welcome to trucking! :o|
> I don't see too many female truckers on the road but I know they are out
> there. Major pitfalls of being a female trucker? TIA.
Major pitfall: As Rocky mentioned, there's a rather vocal minority of
truckers who think women exist to be subjected their lewd suggestions.
Although small in numbers, they make sufficient noise that I've known many
women drivers who said they got out of trucking solely because of all the
verbal harassment.
Personally, I think those guys are gays who hate women because they can
never be women themselves.
My impression is that non-truckers often greatly over-estimate the strength
required to do this job. I know numerous drivers 5 1/2 feet, or shorter,
and no obvious weightlifting habit that easily do this job. There is opnly
a small percentage of drivers that are women, but you see women truck
drivers every day of the week. Frankly I would not waste any time worrying
over your age or sex as a barrier to entry. Some of us like driving and
stay in the job because it isn't physically difficult. I joke and say if I
wanted to work hard for a living I wouldn't have got my CDL. Some driving
jobs are more difficult than others, I'd assume pulling the average truck
driver pulling a flatbed trailer works harder than the average dry van
driver, but the trucking magazines periodically run stories on women drivers
with dozen years hauling flatbed that don't look big enough to take out the
trash, let alone muscle a big tarp in the wind. The point is if you know
how to do it, it's not nearly as difficult as when you don't know what you
are doing. Women, in my experience, are easier to teach than men once they
decide they would like to learn.
There are 3 common ways to get a license and then get a job. Pay a
for-profit school, pay a community college/vo-tech school, or sign up for
"free training" from a trucking company. They each have pluses and minuses.
The fastest way to get the license is to pay a for-profit school $4-8,000
and finish their 3 week course. You are responsible for the tuition
payment. Most schools will guide you to a source for borrowing the money
for class or oyu can borrow from a source you find. Payments may be in the
$150-250 per month. Some "free training" can be nearly as quick but the
trucking company pays the tuition and you are required to work for the
trucking company for 1-2 years or you become liable to re-pay the tuition
bill. One trick here is that an unscrupulous trucking company may charge
you more for tution than you would have paid the for-profit school if you
quit before you contract period is up. Of the 3 methods, this "free
training" is my least recommended option. It obligates the newbie the most
at the earliest possible moment. This industry will teach you a lot in
short order and about the time you finish school you may have a very clear
idea of someo companies you would want to work for and others you would
never work for. If you've signed up for free training, too bad your
obligated until you re-pay your tution through work. The one company
offering "free training" I wouldn't warn oyu away from is Schneider
National, SNI, or just Schneider. They ahve the big orange trucks. I've
never workd for them but everything I've seen about their training indicates
they probably provide the best training, and they are at least honest. They
used to have pretty strict rules about working for them, and your options
were to do it the Schneider way or leave, but they are/were a by-the-book
type of company.
The last way to get ready for a job is the vo-tech/community college route.
Generally the training last much longer, maybe a semested of several months
versus a couple of weeks. Often this is the least expensive option. When I
went to my for-profit school years ago I paid about $4k and got trained in 3
weeks versus paying the vo-tech $1k and taking 4 months. I needed to work
soon so I opted to skip the long waiting list and long class schedule of the
vo-tech in favor of the for-profit.
In a perfect world you will research trucking companies, assuming you will
get the license before you actually start training for the license. Some
trucking companies only accept inexperienced drivers that come to them
through some schools. Much of the hiring requirements of trucking companies
is imposed on them by their insurance carrier. If you and the trucking
company think you would be a perfect match but you haven't met the
requirements of their insurance company you can't be hired.
Finding a company to work for is much more like finding a spouse or a pair
of shoes. It doesn't matter nearly as much which are the poor, average, and
best among all possible candidates. What matters is how does your choice
fit your requirements. It won't make never getting home any eaiser if most
drivers think your trucking company is a swell place. Likewise, if you care
primarily about abig paycheck it won't mean much that your company routes
you home every weekend, which usually means less miles and lower pay. I
would strongly recommend you be careful with Swift. Some of us consider
Swift one of the least desirable companies in the industry. They have a
pretty high percentage of their dirvers that are very new, under the "free
training" contract, and not well trained. If you know of a current Swift
driver and he can satisfy your questions, then discount what I and others
say about Swift. I don't say much bad about any trucking company. Swift is
the only company I can think of that I warn people away from if I can help
it.
Post more questions or whatever else you think would help. It's nice to
have a trucking thread in here.

And not much of a life, either. The only reason it works for me is that I
don't have a life anyway.
I visit friends all the time.
I spent Tues and Weds in the honeymoon suite of the Clearwater Radisson
with an ex-coworker, and have girlfriend stashed in two countries.
I have scores of friends I visit from my other NG, and then all
my -wonderful- buddies from MTT.

I'd say Schneider would probably be a better first company, with no
personal experience with either.

The standards for truck drivers are about the same for being sent to
Vietnam in 1968, all you really need is a heartbeat.

I'd be interested to hear how you learned that, and seemingly little
else.

Personal safety, in some circumstances. But that's just a guess on my
part.
Women often make great drivers after good training, all else being
equal. After training, most drivers revert to the 4-wheeler driving
technique/s they've practiced most of their lives. If you have the
discipline to avoid that, and manage to maintain a fear of the damage
you can do with your new equipment, you'll do fine.
Truck "driving" is at most 50% driving, the rest is management and
interpersonal relations.

I bet you have quite a few years of experience, too. Try doing that as
a first- or second-year rookie.
I'm in my third year, although retired from another career.
Those experiences help.
Also, I truck drive to scuba dive, and I have a support network there,
too.
Still, I only visit those folks once every month or six weeks.
I read, listen to books on tape, and above all, have internet in the
truck.
I have two female OTR (one O/O) drivers that I could hook the OP up with
by e-mail if she contacts me direct.

Under what circumstances did you learn?
You may be in a position of just boning up on the law so you can pass the
written exam, and then borrowing a vehicle to take the drive test.
My only question really.. WHAT STATE would you be looking to work from?
My wife is 5'6", Physically fit but not overly strong. She did fine driving
for 5 years before coming off the road and becoming a CDL
instructor/examiner.
>
> (a) For training, what's the best way to go about the process?
> Training with the big freight companies or with a private school?
I may be a bit prejudice, (I manage a private CDL School) but I think a
private school is the way to go. Like any other business there are good and
bad ones.
Best bet is to look for a school that is accredited by an accrediting agency
recognized by the US department of Education. These programs tend to be
longer (320-600 hours instead of 150-200 hours) and more comprehensive. They
will also be eligible for federal financial aid (Stafford Loans that are not
based on credit and PELL grants)
Make sure you do your homework on EVERY school you look at, even Community
College programs. Most Community Colleges outsource their CDL programs to
private companies such as the SAGE corporation. Look closely at the number
of hours in the program and how many hours you will get behind the wheel.
(some six week programs have only 150 hours, while the competing four week
program may have 200 hours.
While there are many trucking companies that offer "Free" or "Company Paid"
training, read the fine print that training can cost you $5000-$10000 if you
do not complete a certain amount of time with the company. These programs
tend to be short (100 to 150 hours) have very low completion rates and often
are NOT required to be licensed by any outside agency.

Look for a company that fits your needs. If you need to be home on a regular
basis don't go to work for a company that wants you to be away from home for
weeks at a time no matter what they pay (neither you or the company will be
happy) Every year more and more companies are looking for drivers and are
willing to hire students. If you go to a quality school you should have many
options. About 1/3 of my students go to the large Over the road companies
(Swift, Werner, Schnieder, etc) and are gone for 7-10 days or more; a third
go to work for regional companies (TMC, PI&I) and are home most weekends and
sometimes once or twice during the week. the last third go to work for local
or linehaul compainies including Coke, Pepsi, Roadway/Yellow, CCX. Many of
the shorter schools only have opportunities with the big OTR companies.

If the speeding was not excessive (more than 15MPH over the posted speed
limit) you should have no problems at all. IF it's more than 15 over you
will reduce your options by about 10% to 20%

My wife could give you a better perspective on this, but I would say the
biggest issues are
1. it is a Male dominated industry (and many of the men are pigs)
My wife tells me that if you do your job and shut guys down that act like
animals there is very little problem. Let them know that you are out there
to work and not to play games or flirt and you will earn respect.
2. The industry has been slow to adapt to women on the road
There are still some old Truck stops and warehouses that have limited shower
and toilet facilities for women. If you can find a school that has some
women instructors it helps because they know the issues women have on the
road (the first time I drove team with my wife, I stopped to switch out
drivers in a closed scalehouse. I answered the call of nature in the bushes
and washed up with some water I kept in the truck. My wife just started
driving. She stopped at the first rest area to use the Facilities and get a
cup of coffee. She then explained to me that the next time I stopped
somewhere that didn't have a proper restroom she would do nasty things to me
until I understood that she was not going to "wet a tire"
Hope this helps

Don't drag me into your bull shit. I didn't use your name, don't use mine.

The best thing you can give your children can't be bought.
Gee, your terribly correct,,,,,,
don't you work, or are you retired?
Seems to me not to many people regard
you as a nice person,,,,and why do you
put me together with Gashauler, I write
to others as well...
Didn't know I had to ask permission from
you to write when I want.???????
Why do you stay???seems people don't
much care for your snide remarks either...? and me, I don't care what
you say......
And I don't have to ask your permission
to come here and read or post anything
so what's your excuse?????????
joyce
I opted out, because I had other things
I had to do,,,,like the lawns,,,and garden
and the cleaning and cooking at home.
Not like some of you guy's....your better
half does all that for you....and more I
would guess....
Lately I lurk here until my favorite old
time soap is on....Days or our Lives,
and General Hospital..watching them
for about 25 years off and on,,,,my son
Mark when alive,,,use to tape them for me
until my accident and that stopped all
chances of working again.....my son
died,,,,and I got hit by a car coming home
from work....and couldn't work again, left
L.I.NY and came to Virginia...married
and retired..my husband has been in the
hospital three times since 2005, and now
still has to return for final surgery, so I
get to stay home, he works.....
I started working at the age of l6 and
stopped at 54....
There is nothing like a sarcastic person
who know's it all, making comments about
people when they don't know anything about them...and thinks they know
everything and are above it all, when in
reality know nothing of worth....
That is why they are the way they are....
joyce
I had a real good laugh when I saw your post because you are just as stupid
as realitytrasher is. In short you let a fake fuck with you too.
My ISP is going to see that the e-mail above did not come from their system
so they are going to shitcan your complaint just like they do with Tim's!
Now once more, look what Ed post about you:
"Many
Usenet trolls fall into this category but, some are far more sophisticated
and vicious than others."
Rocky
Then explain exactly who it was you were posting about when you posted the
statement above about "Usenet trolls."
Dave Ruff is up to the exact same shit he was up to when he trashed this
newsgroup before.
If he can't beg to you stop replying to my post he will start lying about me
just like realitytrasher and others have.
You have just described realtytrasher, Dave Ruff and others above!!!
COOOOOOL
Now if only you could have figured them out a long long time ago.
Kudos!
Rocky
I'm a 49 state trucker.
I drive 12,000 plus a month (which, unlike just about anyone else here, I
can prove -right now-).
Apparently with all your "lurking", you missed the pictures of me (-and- my
truck) in Alaska last month.
http://picasaweb.google.com/Popeye8762
> Seems to me not to many people regard
> you as a nice person,,,,
Fuck 'em.
I've never once been unfair to anyone here, and when I'm wrong, I
apologize.
I don't owe anyone here anything more than that.
Oh, and, unlike a lot of people here, I'll tell them that to their faces.
There are several people here I'm friendly with, and e-mail, and the rest
can go to hell.
I am not at all hard to be friends with.
>and why do you
> put me together with Gashauler, I write
> to others as well...
Only for the fact that you and he made your drama-queen "leaving"
proclamations together, and you're both flaming hypocrites about posting to
RTQ.
I see you yourself are back in full swing about posting to him, after
repeatedly denying it.
> Didn't know I had to ask permission from
> you to write when I want.???????
That's the second time you've posted that, and this is the second time
I've told you I don't care fuck-all what you write, but when you bullshit
the house, I'll be glad to point it out.
And that's -your- tough shit, because -I- don't need -your- permission to
post, -or- respond to your posts, either.
> Why do you stay???
Why do -I- stay?
Why do -you- stay?
Many of your posts are about how dismal and unchanging this place is, so
don't let the door slam you in the ass on the way out.
-I- enjoy myself here.
I find what information I need, read an occasional interesting post, and
make Queer Wannabe Roger look stupid all in one fell swoop.
-I- don't complain about this place, and whine about leaving.
-You- do.
So why are -you- here, Joyce?
>seems people don't
> much care for your snide remarks either...?
Who, Spineless Dave or Spineless RTQ?
With Richard more or less down and out, those are about the only two
people I slam.
Like I do with -you-, I just hold their remarks up for scrutiny.
All the pain they're in is created by themselves.
Just like you.
> and me, I don't care what
> you say......
Sure you do, or you wouldn't have come out from "lurking" to attack me in
this thread.
I showed you being a lying hypocrite, and now you have to follow me around
and hump my leg.
> And I don't have to ask your permission
> to come here and read or post anything
> so what's your excuse?????????
If you don't need "permission", why do I need an "excuse"?
Not a real big critical thinker there, are ya?
> joyce
Big deal. So you are a 49 state dog walker. Now roll over and play dead.
Rocky - Still laughing at what Zčke or his clone did to you!
Not for those of us that actually -have- a CDL.
> So you are a 49 state dog walker.
Beats being a 1 state dog -washer-.
> Rocky - Still laughing at what Zčke or his clone did to you!
Popeye - Still laughing at what God did to -you-!

No they won't.
They'll add it to your pile.
Nobody believes it wasn't you.
You are a Troll Doug, just like realitytrasher and Dave Rubbish before you.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

More of your Trollshit. Dude, you have just repeated history.
Here, I'll tell you the history that you repeated.
The reason why realitytrasher gave me so much shit in the first place was he
didn't think people were impersonating me and now you make the exact same
mistake!
Too much.
Rocky
What are you blathering about this time?

In the post, I poke fun at "The dougfaced boy" because he received an e-mail
from someone he incorrectly thought was me!
That was exactly like what you did with realitytrasher, where you kept
fucking with him by posting with my name or one that looked like it. True,
the person that fucked with "the dougfaced boy" could have been a copy cat
Troll and not you so that is why I referred to him as "Zčke or his clone"
above.
I even have a expression for it now. I'll call it "The attack of the
clones" where your clone cloning me.
No one cares.
....okay, that is an email address. What about it? I click on it and it
opens up a new blank email.
More evidence you don't have a clue...
I care because it shows what a total idiot you are and why I plan to refer
to you as "The Dougfaced Boy" more often.
Imagine that, another Troll that does not believe that Trolls clone posters!
Once more, this NG can be referred to as the "Attack of the Clones" where a
Clone of Zčke is cloning me.
Didn't I tell you to roll over and play dead? All you have done recently is
started to trash reality yourself and you let this whole newsgroup know that
you and realitytrasher have exchanged bodily fluids.
You are wrong, it is a "message ID." You can use link with Google or some
news servers and it should bring up the post I'm talking about.
news:RMCdnRQQPqfPFADb...@giganews.com
But just incase it does not, I'll quote the post where "The dougfaced Boy"
thought an imposter was me:

I still don't understand why you are crying about me. I know you want
someone to lash out at since Dave shitcanned you, but I don't want to play.
No one cares.
And again I did NOT post anything about him. While are spreading bullshit
care to explain some of those headers in that pile of crap? Look and you

Again do NOT use my name or screen name at any time.
