I have noticed that in some places, usenet groups seem to cost money.
I post here through Google Groups at
http://groups.google.com/group/misc.transport.trucking?lnk=li for free.

Do any of you pay for this? If so, how much?

google is decent but requires a valid working email to signup so you can get
spam from them and others.
www.newsguy.com $40 a year. Not bad for a decent newsserver.
Plus they also let you post and read through your web browser if you like.
Along with totally anonymous posting.
Guaranteed no spam through your email because they munge it for you.
If you want all uncensored newsgroups, then www.giganews.com is a good
place to go.
www.supernews.com is another common one.

I get USENET as part of my service with my ISP. If my ISP did not provide
it there are a number of good free newsgroup servers I could link to. In
fact I did that for a while when I was playing with Hamster on a Windows
box. I suppose I could set up a server on this Linux box but I'll wait for
that.

I don't know who misinformed you richard, but I have been a member of
various Google programs for years and have never ever had even one spam
from them, and they never give emails out.

Google does not send out spam themselves. You get it from "sniffers".
Automated programs that read usenet newsgroups in search of email addys like
your gmail account above. Even though google has begun to munge them, they
are still visible through other services.
That's why many people munge their addys. As you should.

I know someone that pays for a usenet account over and above their ISP. His
reason for paying over and above for usenet is that the ISP limits the free
usenet download bandwidth to 1 or 2GB per month. That is far in excess of
what you would ever use for posting and reading text messages in usenet, but
it's not hard to exceed 2GB if you use the binary news groups for
downloading, radio shows in his case.

If you are happy with your current setup, there isn't much to be gained by
paying to access usenet. I understand some ISP block various news groups,
or don't have access to all NGs.

I think it is about $25.00 a month for my newsgroup access and $80.00 a
month for my unlimited wireless internet, via Sprint. But, that isn't the
only thing I use those for.

Right now, I'm using free internet access and if I wanted, I could even be
using google to post for free.

BTW Kris, believe it or not, I think you have done a lot of good for this
newsgroup. Keep up the good work.

I was quite happy with the newsgroup access through my ISP until they stopped
carrying it and I had to find a service. It costs me $10 per month.

GOD TIM YOU JUST CAN NOT STOP YOUR BULLSHIT.

You started your SHIT in December 2003 when you falsly accused me of
defending Bullis, because Dave Ruff had done that 2 weeks earlier.

You gave me shit about my CDL, because I had a one letter typo in one of my
post, then a lot of other trolls helped you with your SHIT.
