Will it hurt if I use it? I hope not, because it makes it very easy to
shift when running Bobtail. Just leave the high/low selector in the High
position and then shift as if it were a 5 speed.
Anybody else use the second 5th gear as the starting gear when driving
around Bobtail?

thtas just a granny gear will eventually damage if ya use the high side of
it..

There's a reason for it not being marked as a gear.
Even though you can engage it, doesn't mean you should use it.
Why do you even use anything less than 4th gear bobtail?
Long before I learned to drive a semi, I had driven several straight trucks.
That's when I learned that you never never never use first gear unless it's
absolutely necessary to get you out of a hole.
With the higher power engines, I'll start off in 3rd gear fully loaded.
On a hill, 2nd.
Bobtail, I'll start off in 5th simply for the quicker response.
Have you learned how to skip shift yet?
I doubt it.
Richard,
First, I have asked my Service Manager about the gear. He said he would
look into it.
Second, I said "is identical to 5th gear." You go about 15 mph at 1500 RPM
in the "Real" 5th gear vs. the "second" 5th gear. In other words, I am
starting in 5th gear when I am bobtail. I will start in 3rd or 4th with an
empty trailer, depending on terrain, or if I have a heavy trailer.
Since it helps to pick a gear when downshifting, I can name the approximate
speed for 1500 RPM in all the gears from 5th up.
5th 15 mph
6th 20 mph
7th 25 mph
8th 30 mph
9th 35 mph
10th 40 mph
11th 45 mph
12th 55 mph
13th 65 mph
Now, if I think of it as a 5 speed, when driving around Bobtail, 1500 RPM is
20 mph for 2nd, 30 mph for 3rd, 40 mph for 4th, 55 mph for 5th.
As for skipping gears while up shifting. Just don't use the splitter. How
hard can that be? I could even do that when I was a Rookie.
FYI, I happened to find a photo of Zeek's last truck. It is at.

I know I shouldn't do this but the twit is talking about the hidden gear.
The last I heard that gear was made out of a different material than the
others and if you banged it you could hurt it. He must of be real confused
around the drivers table when they were talking about that one.
Dave,
Thanks for the input.
It is pretty hard to bang a gear that is only used for starting out when
driving Bobtail, but, let's say that happened and it broke. It wouldn't
matter much, because I could always just go back to using the real 5th gear
for starting out Bobtail.
FYI I am still waiting to hear from My Service Manager about it. I think he
is God and if he tells me not use it, I will not use it.

I talked with another TMC driver. He told me that when he drives around
bobtail, he "Stays on the high side." We talked a little more and I
realized he was also using the high side of the granny gear or as you call
it, the "hidden gear."
He said he will not use it with a trailer, even if it is empty, but he knows
drivers that will.
Seems there are a lot of people out there that know about the "hidden gear."

They're called drivers...

gspMonkey,
I referred to a TMC driver earlier in the post you replied to. Too bad you
missed that.
I thought it was interesting, that someone else on this NG saw, the truck,
in one of my latest photos.

FYI If you right click on the link above and say "Save Target As..." then
View Properties and go to Summary, you can see exactly when I took that
photo. Seems I am posting more information on this NG than I thought I was.

I don't know how many 13 speeds you have driven, but the jump from 5th to
6th is pretty steep. Meaning the RPMs drop way down.
That being said, if I am Bobtail on flat ground, I'll start in 5th, go to
7th, 10th, 12th and 13th if I am going over 60 mph.
Is that good enough for you?
