Does anyone know if Caltrans has an online route log that you don't have to purchase?
I did find the video/photo log as well as the written versions that you can purchase
(for close to $150 for all sections). I've already found a number of discrepancies
between Terraserver, maps and the CALNEXUS exit number log while working on my
stripchart for I-5 in California.

Although it's not a CalTrans site, Dan Faigin's webpage has all the correct
legislative definitions of routes:

http://www.cahighways.org

Keep in mind that legislative definitions/existance do not necessarily have
anything to do with route status - State Route 42 in the Los Angeles area has
not legislatively existed since 1968 (when I-105 was first defined on the
Century Freeway), but was well-signed for many years after and may still be
signed. Also, on Nunan Parada's page (http://www.geocities.com/bennyp81),
there are pics of CalTrans maintenance occuring recently on the deleted State
Route 159 (passing by the Rose Bowl in Pasadena).

Another important note for I-5: I-5 has a now-secret (formerly well-signed)
multiplex with State Route 99 between US 50 (which is also Business Route 80,
funding I-305, formerly signed State Route 99, and the link for a gap with
State Route 16) to the Sacramento Airport and an unrecognized multiplex with
State Route 16 between US 50 and Woodland.

It used to have a multiplex with State Route 299 between State Route 44 and the
north side of Redding, but this multiplex was removed about a year ago to
reroute 299 back on its old co-routing with former US 99 (now State Route 273).

Thanks. Dan's site has information that I can use in the overview header but isn't
geared toward what I put into the stripchart itself. I'm looking for something
similar to the route log from WA, the road inventory from OR, the post-mile log from
IN or the town maps of VT. I know many states don't publish this information freely
or make it easy to get.

Knew about these already from my Navigator training at Mather AFB back in the '80s.
Spent 8 months in the Sacramento area and spent one day each weekend out on the
roads.

Didn't know about this one and it's not in the Thomas Brothers yet. I'll account for
it on the stripchart.

Thanks. When I made my initial recon of the Caltrans site I noticed the links to the
bridge log but dismissed them without looking as not really helpful. It turns out
that these will be quite helpful. Guess I need to do a little better roaming.

No, it's not your fault, Caltrans has a horrible website. You can't
find half the stuff on the site unless somebody links to it off a
third-party site. And the individual District websites are all laid-out
and run differently from one another (kind of like the districts
themselves) and usually poorly (exactly like the districts themselves)
My favorite is District 12 (O.C.), where there's been a message on their
construction projects page for 2 years now with an admonition to please
be patient while they update their links regarding the construction
projects.

Okay, rant over now. Enjoy the bridge log.
