Looks like the Iowa DOT is doing the same thing they did with the
Avenue of the Saints and IA 27 eight years ago -- they're extending IA
163 as a second number along US 63 and US 34 from Oskaloosa through
Ottumwa to Burlington in order to create a continuous number for the
expressway from Des Moines to Burlington that was completed last year.

Just a couple of comments on the article. They didn't get the IA 27
part right, they called it U.S. 27. Also, if it makes sense to give
one number to the Des Moines-Burlington route, why doesn't it make
sense to give one number to the southeast Des Moines loop route? Then
again, this is an article in the Burlington paper.

My guess is that 5 already extends from I-35 all the way south through
Knoxville and Albia to Centerville. US 65 is N-S as well. They'd have
to devise another number, but they did that with the Avenue of the
Saints. I remember when they added the signs to the Cedar Rapids Area
when I lived there. It made more sense. Maybe they thought it would
add confusion. I just noticed the 163 signs today, but then again I
haven't been out as much.
