This update is of the highly controversial Road to Nowhere in Swain
County. The story starts in the 1940s when the US Government flooded
what was NC 288 during the construction of Fontana Dam and Fontana
Lake. the government had loosely promised the building of a
replacement of NC 288 along the North Shore of the road.
Since then concerns over the environment, costs, and other poltical
involvement have created a controversy that has stretched for nearly
60 years.
