RMcN also shows this. It probably really is there.

US 85 still exist from the Mexican Border in El Paso to the Texas/New Mexico
state line on I-10, where it seems to disappear until the south side of
Colorado Springs where it reappears. My AASHTO US Highway log dates from
1989, so I don't know if the official routing has changed, but it list US 85
as a contiguous route through New Mexico.

Although it technically ends in Colorado, I've seen on AAA and Goshua maps the
little El Paso inset with US 85 going from Mexico north. Is it just a "orphan"
or a map mistake?

So, would US 85 still start in El Paso? It would then be one of the few US
routes not distorted by the Interstate System...

Then...is US 85 multiplexed with I-25 to Colorado Springs? Why isn't it let out
for "fresh air" until then...When 66 and 40 were multiplexed until 1985, I
remember 66 getting "fresh air" by separating from 40 every now and then.

It isn't marked at all in New Mexico, but Texas has yet to decommission it.
So, the little spur going from I-10 to Juarez is indeed an orphan route.
There is no reason to maintain the route south of Denver because of the
length of multiplexing with I-25, so that segment at El Paso should
probably just be numbered as a Texas spur route.

Is the US 85 thing like US 87 in Colorado, where it is multiplexed and unmarked
with 25 entirely? BTW, why doesn't it get 'fresh air' by being one or several
of the I-25 business routes until Colorado? Would justify the US 85 in
Texas...

Do locals in El Paso still refer to US 85?

Direct cut and paste from my Colorado Highways site:

"After entering south of Cheyenne, it goes through Greely, Brighton, and
joins I-76 at Exit 12. It follows I-76 southwest to Exit 9, where it
leaves with US 6. It goes south to I-70, heads west along that to I-25,
and heads south. US 85 leaves I-25 at Exit 207 as Santa Fe Dr., and
heads south before again joining I-25 at Exit 183 in Castle Rock. From
there is follows I-25 all the way to New Mexico except for about 20
miles in Colorado Springs and a short section (from
Exit 52 to 49) in Walsenburg."

Colorado really, *really* hates posting highways that are concurrent
with Interstates, even if it's just for a few miles. The sections of US
85 on I-70 and I-25 in Denver are not marked.

This is in line with what CDOT's route logs say. The only sections of
"S.H. 85" mentioned in them are the ones that are autonomous. As to what
AASHTO thinks of the existance of US 85, who knows. Every map I've seen
shows US 85 shields concurrent with I-25, so the map companies are
acknowledging it exists.

Side note: There is no "S.H. 87" in the official Colorado route logs.
Some maps show it, some don't. Somewone will have to fill me in as to
what ASSHTO says.

Does that "US-87" sign still exist on I-25 just north of the Mousetrap?
It used to be posted with I-25 and US-6.

I took the picture on December 30th. I'm not sure what you mean by US 6.
As far as I know that's always come down I-76 and Vasquez Blvd. to I-70.

The AASHTO log I have (from 1989) list US 87 as a contiguous route along
I-25 in Colorado. But as Matt mentioned, Colorado does not post multiple
routes on Intestates.

This is a policy that other states seem to be using as well. Oregon has
removed a lot of dual markings on Intestates, especially outside of the
Portland Area.

Sorry, brain fade. When you haven't lived in the area for almost 3 years... <g>

The route is essentially non-existent in New Mexico. Its former routes
either have state route numbers, befitting their status as local connecting
roads, or have been turned back to local government (e.g., in Santa Fe). I
think the route is better known by its street name in El Paso rather than its
designation. Really, there is no reason (outside of nostalgia) to post U.S.
85 south of Denver.

It was there in December, the last time I was in Denver.

The 1989 AASHTO US Highway log shows the southern terminus of US 85 at
the International Boundary at El Paso, Texas.
