Two days without any new posts. Granted, I have a lot of idiots killfiled, but
still.

It's a shame, too, as m.t.r. remains my all-time favorite road forum.

RIP to a once-great newsgroup.

I blame the influx of teenagers who showed up around 2000. Some of them
have gone on to be respected members of the community, but they ruined the
group.

You don't think usenet has suffered from the explosion and
fragmentation technology has engendered?

All newsgroups and fora go through lifecycles. They are the sum of
their users. Some have been killed by spammers, some by invading
hordes (Meow!), some by other shiny things acting like the Pied Piper.

Some have come back to life by the miracle of a few people deciding to
use net.

It's not the group per se, it's all of usenet.
Major ISP's dropped the service after NY AG Cuomo threatened to take action
against them "For harboring child pornography".
Since the service was free, most just never bothered to sign up for paid
services.
Where MTR has seen only like 4 new threads in a week, MTT hasn't seen any
in over 2 weeks.

I have ALL the idiots filtered off. Well, might have missed one.

What's the matter? Does nobody want to RSVP to your roadmeets?

This newsgroup is not dead because you say it is, H.B. Individuals
have contributed to this newsgroup for well over a decade. They still
do. What has left, thankfully speaking, is the clubhouse mentality.
People previously clustered together and thought they were the
"definition" of how road geeks, road scholars, viatologists, etc.
should be. Morality was mixed in with science. Really, what did you
expect would happen? There is no such thing as an absolutist
morality. There were various ratpacks of people here somehow thought
otherwise. Instead of promoting thoughts about roads around the
country and the world, people were trying to create territories where
they were supposedly thought-leaders, including arbitrary definitions
of right and wrong. Don't deny it. I absolutely hated that period of
time and it wreaked havoc to all participating in this newsgroup.

Luckily social platforms like Facebook have taken the lonely souls
elsewhere. Well, most people. (There are still those who try to
create roadmeets on public newsgroups.)

The last decade was quite sophomoric. You had sects of individuals
who, despite their scientific skills to road studies, were overwhelmed
by their need to affiliate with others. They thought their methods
were the standard. This led to egotism, ostrasizing of others, and
the discouraging of information sharing. I hated it. I was indirectly
influenced by it. It was an unfortunate time. I am still here
because I value the objective exchange of viatological information.
For those who visit this newsgroup, viatology is the scientific study
of roads. (And welcome aboard, too!)

This newsgroup is back to its basics. It's all about exchange of
information. It's not about who you identify with. It's all about
people who love roads and want to share information about them.

I honestly don't care if you leave or stay. I don't care if you have
a killfile list as long as a phonebook. Honestly, I don't care if I'm
on your killfile. This post is far-reaching and is all about
inclusion. It's not about labeling people and categorising them.
Share objective information and maybe people will listen. If they
don't, at least you made a scientific contribution that others one day
can locate in a Google search. We are viatologists. Don't like that
term? Frankly, you can share it with the people who have replied to
your RSVP. Or perhaps you can whine about it on Facebook much like
the others who have done the same.

I am proud of the Worldwide Transportation Library, and the 20+
countries covered by volunteers who strictly love driving and want
others to do the same. I am also proud of those who aren't part of
the Worldwide Transportation Library but share scientific knowledge of
roads day in and day out.

To the future! MTR is alive and well.

I knew that the New York AG's actions had a lot to do with it (for some reason I
keep thinking it was Spitzer instead of Cuomo) because a lot of ISPs dropped
Usenet. I know BellSouth and AOL did, and AT&T (BellSouth) provided the Usenet
feed for a lot of ISPs. I don't read any of the other groups that I used to read
on a regular basis so I don't know if they've suffered the same fate as this
group or not.

r.a.d. is pretty much dead as well except for posts from cross-posting
trolls from the political groups (which I notice affect this group from
time to time as well).

Basically, when the regular contributors to a newsgroup stop posting and
new posters don't take their place, the group pretty much dies. For
instance, I don't see any recent posts from Scott Kozel or John Lansford
(and who knows how many other former regular posters have stopped
posting over the last couple of years).

You are one of the very few people who post new stuff.

For the others, instead of bitching, why can't they post news reports
about new highway projects, new construction technologies, new road
technologies, etc.? Or, their experiences on a road trip?

Just for the record, we had 21 people in attendance at Ashland. This was very
close to a record attendance for such a gathering. The meet was publicized in
four other venues besides this newsgroup. Among the attendees was Tim Brown.

So why don't you post some new stuff? Surely there are some
interesting road projects or travel experiences you could share.

I've really had nothing of relevance to post. I moved in with Pokey in NYC over a year ago, dumping my car and my ex in the same stroke. I haven't gotten another car, since it's too expensive for petrol, insurance and parking, and there is adequate public transport available. That, and I work a lot of irregular hours, so I can't just pick up and go at weekends like I used to, and when I am out and about, it's usually to shows, or exploring the various parts of NYC.

Zee problem is all the Soviets and Nigerians trolling for email addresses and unleashing a flood of junk emails to usenet posters.

Yeah but there are a lot of immature kids on there. The moderators are also
a bit too zealous. Just steer clear of the fantasy highway board.

It's overmoderated and some of the moderators are mini Stalins and there are
too many children there and the fantasy highway board is retarded, but
otherwise it's OK.

MTR sucked 10 years ago. It started going downhill around 2000.
