"The" in the SF Bay Area

As many people here have pointed out, we Bay Area people don't put "the" in
front of route numbers, as opposed to southern Californians. An example is
"101" vs. "the 101."

Mark Simon, a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, has recently picked
up on this topic, decrying the increasing use of "the." Here are his columns
