According to
http://www.hoy.es/20120518/local/lusitania-express-dejara-atravesar-201205182000.html

the Lusitania Express Madrid - Lisbon will be rerouted via Salamaca
from next week, due to the closure of the line Caceres - Valencia de
Alcantara - Marvao beira - Torre de Vargens, resulting in a future detour
of 109 kilometres.

IIRC the Lusitania Express was re-routed via Salamanca for a while a few
years back.

There was a threat last year that the border crossing from ES to PT at
Tui (on the Vigo to Porto route) was to be closed. Clearly a pair of EU
countries that really are being (slowly) separated apart rail wise.
