Many years ago in the mid-1970s I toured about Eastern Australia by
train. Eventually I ended up in Brisbane and then caught a train to
Toowoomba. There I waited a couple of days for a goods train south -
actually it was loco-hauled with a guards van / passenger carriage
tacked to the rear. We went down to Wallangara or Tenterfield I think.
In the goods yard and station at Wallangara I remember seeing triple-
gauge track including standard gauge and narrow QR 3' 6" and something
else - maybe broad? I wanted to continue south to Warwick but there
were no trains at all. So I hitch-hiked. Then caught a fast train to
Sydney. However I bet there are not many of these back-country lines
left. And do they still have triple-gauge track at Wallangara? CJB.

OK - found a rail map at: http://www.railmaps.com.au/nswnorth.htm

I certainly went from Toowoomba to Wallangarra by goods / passenger
train.

I might have gone by train to Tenterfield & Glenn Innes?

But I know I then hitch hiked to Armidale.

So - is it still possible to travel on the goods lines say to
Wallangarra and or Goondiwindi etc.?

Thanks - Chris B.

The NSW line to Wallangarra was closed in 1988 so the mid 70s. you may have
gone by rail motor but I'm not sure.

All the mixed freight/passenger trains in Qld have gone - except for the Bne
to Charleville and Townsville to Mt Isa. These have sleepers and chair cars.
The small branch lines no longer have pax due to there not being any guards on
these trains any more. Train still runs Bne - Wallangarra. Google QR to see
if the train still goes to Goondiwindi. Last time I was there it did.
