An official with Air Canada's regional carrier Jazz says the airline
is removing life vests from all its planes to save weight and fuel.
Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stuart said Thursday Transport Canada
regulations allow airlines to use floatation devices instead of life
vests provided the planes remain within 50 miles of shore.
Safety cards in the seat pockets of Jazz aircraft now direct passengers
to use the seat cushions as floatation devices.
Stuart says Jazz is a transcontinental carrier that doesn't fly over
the ocean.

Do any ACA Jazz flights land at any US int'l ports of call,
Bellingham, WA excluded? If so, this is rather unusual as it may
conflict with US regs regarding FAA regs for emergency equipment,
though I hear that some US carriers aren't carrying life vests anymore,
either. It's interesting that they are down to cutting corners like
this to save fuel..

Looking at the AC web site,
http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/destinations/maps/map.html
Jazz still flies to NewFoundland and Labrador and that is most likely
more than 50nm over water. Halifax-Boston is probably borderline,
requiring slight diversion to hug the coast.
Since Jazz is based in Atlantic Canada, I am somewhat surprised to see
Jazz state they don't fly over water.
One would have to fidn out their fleet scheduling to see if they have
aircraft that always remain in atlantic canada. That might allow Jazz to
have some aircraft fitted with vests for those hops over water.

Halifax-Boston. And from Toronto, there are manu flights that go over
the great lakes to the USA. They also fly to New York and Boston which
may involve flying over water even if they come from land.
In reality though, I have to wonder if life vests are of any use. If the
plane overshoots or undershoots a runway at LGA and you end up in water,
are you going to fumble to find that vest and put it on, or are you
going to run out of the sinking aircraft ? I am not even sure you'd
think about ripping the seat pillow off and bringing it with you to the
door.
On the other hand, on Dash-8 or CRJs, I don't think you have inflatable
slides/rafts, so if you ditch in water, you probably have to jump into
the water and get wet.
