Seems to me that JAL was a jewel airline, perhaps not as highly ranked
as Cathay or Singapore, but still right up there.

Now, they are saying that its debts are $8,8 billion more than its
assets, it needs massive refunding, may enter bankrupcy etc. It still
represents about 60% of flights over Japan, but is said to be bloated,
high cost, with some 290 subsidiaries.

There had been reports of Delta and American wanting to inject money to
help save Jal (for Delta, it would mean depriving Oneworld of a japanese
airline, for AA, it would mean protecting its oneworld partner in asia).

So, what happened to Jal for it to become nearly terminally ill ? Was it
on auto-pilot for too many years without any adjustement to its business?

has its service degraded resulting in loss of profitable customers ?
