Say you work in Manhattan, does it matter if you live in Brooklyn or
Queens, tax-wise?

What is the tax on $100K annual income if you work in Manhattan? What
if income is higher than $100K?

Thanks,
Jo

If you work in NYC (anywhere) and you live in NYC (anywhere), you will pay
resident NYC income tax in addition to NYS resident income tax. If you live
outside of NYC, you generally do not owe tax to NYC. The one exception is
that non-resident employees of the city itself owe a special fee to NYC
which is exactly equal to the amount of NYC resident income tax they would
have owed had they been residents of the city. The NYC tax rates can be
found in the instructions to the NYS income tax returns and NYS estimated
tax forms as NYC taxes are computed on the same form(s) as NYS taxes.

Thanks Ira. So, if one married with 3 kids and salary is $140K. What
would be the taxes breakdown if someone works in NYC and work in
Brooklyn?

Thanks,
Jo

You'll have to get a copy of Form IT-201 and work through it. Although NY
follows federal rules for the most part, there are some significant
differences which could have a significant impact on your state/city tax
liability.
