Question: should they file 1040-ES jointly, or separately, when their filing
status for 2007 is not yet known?
Filing a joint 1040ES preserves their flexibility unless they
are in a community property state.
Filing separately however, makes it easier to deal with an IRS who
doesn't understand how to untangle a joint estimate into
separate 1040s.
Here in Ohio we file many MFS returns with joint estimates.
And often have to deal with an IRS unable to separate the
estimates. Ohio solved that issue a couple of years back.
