the good news is there is still plenty of oil in the ground
so these are still the days of cheap oil
if the usa government had made some fairly modest investments
since the 1973 embargo
the usa would have alternative infrastructure in place and ready to go today
but we kept being told that alternatives were not competitive
and -gosh- the government is inefficient and inept
so we left it to the market
and now find ourselves stuck
with no alternatives
and nothing we can do before some people are ruined

Indeed. Bullets are cheap. If we had simply shot the Greens and tree

The Greens and environazis are facing what they wrought
No new refineries, blocking exploration and drilling means we are
dependant on foreign oil. Now they are having to pay high prices for
JetA for their private jets, and for their SUVs and so forth.
Its moronic fuckwits like you that supported them, and are now trying
to obfuscate the consequences of their and your actions.
Fascinating that leftards always run away from the unintended
consequences of their agendas, when it comes back to bite them.
Thats why "feelgoodism" is a really lousy way to view the world.
Gunner
let me predict your further whining
if i were to ask (again) where they are supposed to get the oil from
you declare that because oil companies are not allowed to freely foul farmland
we dont know where the oil is
and therefore there must be vast reservoirs just bubbling everywhere
so because land might be more valuable used say for growing food
you can pretend theres vast amounts of unknown oil
unless we ruin the entire country to prove there aint
how many refineries in bakersfield? anything like richmond?
> Its moronic fuckwits like you that supported them, and are now trying

so its clintons fault that oil production in iraq dropped after 2001?

Well, so far, you've failed to nominate any single spot where there is
known oil that could not be driled with existing technology?

Me, too! I particularly remember the Delaware River. There were none of
those icky fish in it then, except for a few mutated carp. And none of that
green stuff growing on the bottom. Just nice yellow mud from shore to shore.
Of course, you had to pull aluminum boats out of the water real quick after
taking a ride, or it would eat right through their bottoms. <g>
Now we catch shad and trout there. Bio-infestations everywhere...

Is funny. The same democrats who claim to be all concerned for
the "working class" and the "Poor", are the same ones who have done
their best for the last forty years, to make sure that the working
class and poor get the shaft. Having restricted the production and
refining of petroleum in this country, now the Democrats bring forth a
plan to solve higher prices by increasing taxes, and confiscating the
earnings of oil companies above a level to be determined by a bunch of
economical illiterates
Price of gas too high? then let us drill for more off the Florida,
California and Gulf coasts. But the Democrats don't want that to
happen, they'd rather export the pollution to the third world.
Same goes for drilling of oil on the Alaskan north slope.
But the Democrats don't like either of those ideas, so they should
just shut up, and walk.

The last two Florida governors, both Republicans, along with the

Let me interject some real world reality here.
The company I worked for in Indonesia operated four different
production areas for Atlantic Richfield Indonesia for probably a total
of ten years. During that time I never saw ARCO choke a well (limit
production).
In fact, even when we requested a slow down in flow rate on one or two
wells they refused. I well remember the Assistant Production Manager
saying, to me, "YOU MEAN YOU WANT ME TO CALL CALIFORNIA AND TELL THEM
THAT WE ARE REDUCING PRODUCTION?" Which I interpreted to mean he
didn't want to do that.

One example serves as the measure of all possible contingencies?

Your personal anecdotal evidence is noted.
Your sample size is however too small to indicate industry-wide trends.

Ive never paid for pussy in my life. Been a bunch of times it would
have been far cheaper to have done so....when you figure in drinks,
dinner, movie etc etc..much cheaper to have rented.
Now about you renting your ass to illegal aliens.......

At the time ARCO was producing nearly half of the oil in Indonesia -
you consider that a "too small" example?
Or, you realize that your comment "Why would big oil want to increase
the supply and lower the price?" is simply the rambling of an
uninformed fool and are trying to "cover your ass" as the jargon has
it?

How "extremely small" is that, exactly?

Limiting the production rate increases the total oil
production over time.
You get more total oil out; just takes a bit longer.

Lie by misdirection.
While Rush was demanding the death sentence for drug users he, himself,
was not only addicted but using a foreign-born cleaning lady to score his
prescription drugs, forging prescriptions and doctor-shopping for more.
Rush only admitted his "problem" when he got caught.
This is a good example of why you're widely considered a liar.

the question isnt the condor range
thats a diversion because gunner got snagged in his own rhetoric again
Democrats seem to be of the mind set that it is better to get 50%
of a one pound pie, than 33% of a two pound pie.
HP had a radio ad for their printers, and the first guy talking
had a marvelous printer, for only 1 million dollars. "After that,
it's all profit." The other guy, HP, say he'll sell their's for $99"
"Where's the money in that?" says the first guy. "Well make it up in
volume."

Of course its a diversion on your part. It usually is
Condors are exceptionally rare in the US..so the "range" the article
claims is highly bogus.

Wall St. Take it up with the commodities traders.

form someone who thinks a company maximizes profits by maximizing sales?
You IDIOT-
We KNOW where there are vast ammounts of oil.
First- how can you "ruin" a block of ice that melts in summer and freezes in
winter. It's a place where 99.99999% of the world's population will never
see. Why? Because it's dark 6 months a year and a freezzing, lifeless, flat
no man's land in the summer.
Anwar
or how about-
You drill a well 50 miles off the coast of Florida or California. You know
what you'll see if you stand on the beach? Nothing. It's over the horizon.
You know what happens if you take a fishing boat out to it? Fish... lots of
fish. It provides a habitat for a whole eco system.
Environmentalists along with the democrat party don't want us to drive.
When gas gets to ten dollars a gallon, they can acheive their purpose. This
is who you people are electing.

There are two ranges noted in the reference above. The larger one
mentioned by Cliff was for the Pleistocene epoch (1,808,000 to 11,550
years ago). The range greatly contracted during the Holocene epoch
(following the Pleistocene to the present). At one point, there were
only 22 condors left. Thanks to a captive breeding program, there are
now about 300 of the birds (some reintroduced to the wild, some
captive).

try eat gasoline for dinner tonight
Free markets to be exact. It's a wonderful thing! Most all of us who
have a mutual fund have some exposure to oil industry holdings. This is
what drive the price.
Never been one to cheer the Republicans but I must say they have lined
my 401k this year with my eshares holdings of oil (the cool way to buy
into the mania). It's been great! Every time I see some redneck driving
alone in his big ol' 4x4 truck burning fuel I get a tear in my eye
thinking how much more comfortable my retirement will be! I've made WAY
more in oil investments than I've even come close to consuming the stuff
(then again I switched to 4 cylinders a LONG time ago).
I used to think 5 bucks was the price point that folks will REALLY do
something about gas use... But I've since changed that price point to 8
bucks. Why? Still the love of the car. I love this country!

Amazingly enough it is high because the demand is higher then the
supply. Of course I don't expect that you will accept this as it is
too simple for you to comprehend. You'd rather blame Big Oil, Little
Green Men, those guys in the black helicopters, or some other vast

Do a google search on oil wells in Los Angeles:
There are oil fields beneath such high-end locales as Huntington
Beach, Newport Beach, El Segundo, Los Angeles downtown, Century City,
Cheviot Hills, and even Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills High School has
oil wells right next to the football field. One drill site with more
than 60 wells, drilled directionally to as far as a mile from the
surface entry and casing, is located in what looks like a 10-story
office building, all of two blocks from the Beverly Hills city line.
Director Steven Spielberg's mother lives down the street.
All in all, there are 55 known oil fields in the Los Angeles area,
with something over 30,000 producing wells and an equal number of
older, plugged, and abandoned wells.
Ruin the whole country indeed!

The devalued dollar is only one part of the increase in price.
Commodity trading is the other.
But you did know that, right?
Is the drop in the dollar enough to account for the doubling of gas
prices in the past 2 yrs?

Krugman pointed out a couple of days ago that there is no hoarding going on,
so there is no evidence that it's the result of commodity futures
speculation:

What happened to the much-hated "Prius-driving liberal?" Did they all trade
them in on limos?
Or am I confusing this sputtering tirade with last week's sputtering tirade?
d8-)
--
Ed Huntress
If that is true, it would be really bad news for the peak oil deniers.
Especially, since it happened right on schedule.
The "peak" has been pushed up a bit because of demand from China, India, and
some developing countries, which wasn't accurately anticipated.
But that doesn't change the situation. Demand is 'way up, and getting
higher.

Ed Huntress
And he's largely correct as far as he went.

Sort of. Krugman's analysis was extremely superficial. I'm surprised because
I thought he knew better than to pull this sort of thing.
There certainly is pressure from the demand side of the oil industry but it
isn't placing any real strain on supply.
Not really.
I've seen two things that have driven recent pricing. The first is
selectively withholding of production. When PK says there is no evidence of
hoarding, he's ignoring this. Oil in the ground today is a better investment
that production today.
This leads to the second observation.
The worlds central banks, in response to the mortgage and mortgage insurance
con market, have been flooding the markets with liquidity for months and
they still are. Several large PE funds that I'm aware of have opened and
then closed in less than four weeks and you'd think that once they had
closed they'd buy something. There was sort of a pause that has now shifted
to commodities and especially OIL. This is why people are correctly able to
argue that the price increases we've seen are the result of demand. They are
demand driven all right but not by current demand. It's anticipated future
demand that is being priced in.
BTW, the money also isn't coming from the traditional or expected sources -
ie. banks and investment bankers.
It's coming from other funds that have tapped into fresh liquidity. They are
doubling down rather than agregating their losses and taking their lumps
using the fresh liquidity they have been provided. They are doing this in a
very pernicious way. It's funny when you think about it.
Banks and funds are dumping mortgages rather that waiting for them to fail
at a discount but the banks are actually funding those discounted purchases
with fresh loans.
We are moving from the age of the A-Bomb into the H-Bomb era financially
speaking.
I find it very hard to believe that Paul Krugman wouldn't know all of this.
In fact, it makes me question my own facts.

in any illegal activity whatsoever, and even if they did the perp
probably deserved it.
Thanks for the explanation.

Don't take his word for it. Go consult a clinical psychiatrist. Get
a PROFESSIONAL opinion. Then do whatever you wanted to in the first

Near as I can tell, from my investing experience, is that tankers are
running full, with little excess capacity. While technically supply and
demand are not truly limiting, there are a couple of bottlenecks that
are inelastic in the short term. Tanker capacity is scheduled to
increase over the next few years, but I do not know of its ultimate
plateau levels as compared with end-user desires.
Just another data point.
