Refresh my memory. What interest does the U.S. have in the Mideast other
than oil and a desire not to see Israel pushed into the sea?
In the case of the oil, can one make the case that we would have little
interest in the Mideast if we were energy self-sufficient? Seems to me that
if we had all the power plants we needed, and were producing the oil we
needed at home, perhaps this mess could have been avoided.

If the fundamentalists were allowed free reign in that area, they'd take
over and make a large Islamic nuclear state. You thought the Cold War was
bad?

Humanitarian. Strategic military. Cultural.

You are overlooking one point.

This is not merely a fight about oil. Or Israel. Or the presence
on Saudi Arabian soil - close to the most sacred Islamic sites -
of American military infidel forces.

No.

Rather, it is literally a clash between cultures. American
culture is infiltrating and pervading the Islamic world
more and more each day. Hollywood, rock and roll, American
fashions and sense of what's 'cool' (and insistance on human
rights); all of these things are an anathma to Islamic
fundamentalism, and it's what their children are embracing.
They can establish brutal regimes that outlaw all these
things, but to keep their world the way they want it, ALL
those things have to go worldwide.

Even if we didn't buy foreign oil, didn't support Israel,
kept out mouths shut and stayed within our own borders,
bin Laden and his ilk would STILL come after us.

We are an alternate system. And - to their minds - must
be destroyed.

Oil at home is as non-renewable as oil from abroad. When the last wells go
dry, what are we going to do while waiting for the earth to make more?
It'll be a long wait.

We need to get to work on energy systems which are independent of any and
all oil.
No, it won't be easy.
Yes, it will be necessary.

Was a news article couple of nights ago
got lost in all the war news. Some tree
hugger was sitting in branches of tree
in Oregon protesting logging of old
growth forest (or something like that). Fell
asleep and promptly fell 60ft to the ground!
Is in serious condtion with multiple injuries.

Frank, I think your analysis is dead-on-target...
This is ALL about culturalism, and people need to wake up to the fact that
Racism isn't about skin color, it's about culture..
One of Mankind's greatest flaws seems to be his unwillingness to abandon the
old traditions when they are counter-productive,even when it's obvious to a
blind man that many of these old traditions hold us back and keep us
oppressed.
The concept of Multi-culturism seems tragically flawed, does anyone dispute
that?
Since rituals require an observance of an age-old tradition, they are, by
their very nature,
rigid, and cannot/willnot adapt to the times.
Now, how can a clash of rigid, unchanging cultures come to a compromise?
Answer: they cannot, and willnot..
Conclusion?
As history shows us time and time and again,
the inferior culture will be assimilated by the superior one...
It seems clear to me that means, C VS M, ultimately..
History repeats itself, and the price goes up...

It would just have been delayed a little.

Islam mandates that everyone be converted to Islam, or killed. A
religious war to the death has only been delayed, IMO, because of the
incredible level of corruption presently existing in the Islamic
countries.

We use more than our "fair share" of energy, because we PRODUCE so many
products which foreign societies have been unable to produce for themselves.

Thus, a significant portion of our energy usage is for PROVIDING THE REST
OF THE WORLD WITH THE SHIT THAT THEY ARE UNABLE TO MAKE FOR THEMSELVES.

Cut back on US energy consumption, and the first to suffer will be
the various 3rd world nations.

And that's a FACT.
