I've noted from previous posts that several of you folks are still
using older hardware and older versions of Windows.

And some, like myself, even use older OS's on newer machines. ie I
have a laptop with both Win98 (and DOS) loaded on one partition and
Windows XP on another. (My favorite desktop has Win98 only, along
with DOS 7.1)

In any event, as I also do some old computer rebuilds and
refurbishments for other folks (friends, family, and some
disabled/poor folks), and helping guys in my line of business who want
to be able to run Win98 for the same reasons I use it, I'm always
nosing around and fooling around with Win98 related things. Often
checking various Internet sites where guys much brighter than myself,
and seemingly guys with a whole lot more spare time than I have, have
produced some upgrade or enhancement or fix to Win98.

Anyway, I've known about the following items for some time, but just
never seemed to get around to actually testing all of them. But
recently did. I do enough Win98se installs and fixes that I finally
got tired of thumbing thru a library of CDs and made a master that
contains the following upgrades and fixes.

It makes life a little easier. I do a new Win98se install, then add
the items listed below. Result is a Win98se OS that runs better and
is easier to use than the original. Fewer glitches, fewer crashes,
and it's faster. After that I install apps for the user/owner, but
that's another story.

Note ... I invented nothing, developed nothing.. All the below is the
work of others. And I give their names and or point to their web
sites.

One thing to note for those interested. All the links I give for
downloading programs, updates, etc are links which will allow you to
download full, installable versions of everything. So if, for
instance, yah click on the Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 link, you're
gonna end up downloading the entire thing locally. And you'll have to
run and install it manually. I did this on purpose. While it may take
a while for those with slow net connections to download things. Once
yah got em, yah got em. I'd suggest burning all to a CD. After all,
to reinstall later, if your puter crashes, it'll be faster and easier
to reload all from CD.

After all, this is misc.survivalism isn't it? And the idea is to be
ready for when things go wrong.

17. Now for the adventurous. Optional, you may want to try adding
MGDx's Win98 to WinME upgrade. This does NOT install Windows ME. It
does however install certain components of Win ME which have been
tested to work with Win98, and to be improvements over the Win98
versions.

Yes, I've installed this upgrade, a few times now. Has worked fine
for me.

However, MGDx's program has 7 options.

Options 1, 2, and 3 require that you have all of the Win ME cabs on
hand, on a CD or on your harddrive. Option 1 will transfer and
register about 600 new components from Win ME into your copy of
Win98SE.

If you don't have those, all isn't lost. Options 4, 5, 6, and 7 add a
few enhancements which are worthwhile. And don't require you to have
the Win ME cabs.

See:
http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S

The conversion program:
http://ftp.mdgx.com/4

18. You can also add Tihiy's Win98/ME Revolution Pack
http://tihiy.windos2000.net/

Windows 98 Revolutions Pack top 10 features - why you need it...

It REALLY FIXES KB891711 vulnerability (this link leads to separate
fix; it isn't required for RP2.2 and higher)

It ENABLES 32-bit icons. Can't you feel difference between 2000 and
XP? This update isn't for you.

It ENABLES 32-bit icons. Isn't that enough?! No?! Just look in
screenshot section.

It REPLACES idiotic 9x Ctrl-Alt-Del dialog with powerful Resource
management utility which really helps to save system stability
For those of you who can't live witout 4)... It still here! It can sit
there by default... Just press "Other tasks" - and you're king!

It makes Windows look&feel more modern. You don't believe? Ah, you're
boring.

It's absolutely freeware!!! Don't give your money to Bill because of
XP looking cool.

O... I've forget about Fade Effect, Align to Grid, Lock Taskbar,
Transparent Labels features? Ah, well... Goto "Display" - "Effects"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been given some 60Meg IDE drives. I think I will do
a fresh install of 98SE and apply all your listed patches.
It ought to be educational at the very least.

If you don't already use it, you might consider Drive Image.
I make images during the installation process and if one
step barfs, I can retry without reloading everything.

It makes a dandy uninstall tool. Image your PC before installing
any new software. Then if that new software sucks as much as
most will, just restore from the image you just made.

You can also use LFN, a long file name program to copy the enitre
contents of a C: drive/partition to D:(or E~Z) drive/partition.
Not as fast, but it is free. It can be found at
http://lfntools.sourceforge.net/
This will also work on any FAT32 partition.

Two other very good and free prgrams are Adaware and Spybot-
Search and Destroy. They help to remove the nasties that creep into
your system no matter how carefull you are.

I appreciate the time you took to collect and organize this. This was
not a casual task. I would be interested in your comments vis-a vis
WinMe. I have this on one of my machines that was in the basement
"archive". Recently, I have started to get this computer in shape in
order to pass it on. I took a lot of ribbing from my girlfriends because
this was a "dead end OS" when I got it and indeed MS didn't really do
any thing to enhance it. Am I now to understand that ME is considered,
in some ways, a superior OS than Win98SE? Speaking honestly, if I spend
more than one hour a week doing maintenance (dat file updates, checking
OS changes etc), on my computer I feel like it's not stable enough to
use on an ongoing basis. However, I have more time now and have been
following the kids errant jump shots so I might as well be doing this. I
did some research and got to this
http://ftp.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT
so I see where some of the community is. The hyperlink below, number 16

I realize you aren't responsible and the server may be down. Even the
link from the installation guide (which is the same)
http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=38193
does not work. If you have an alternative, please post it. Again, thank
you for taking the time. I don't have 98 but some of the options look
like they are workable for ME.

I have LFN on the hardrive for when I shift to DOS.

FWIW, Axcel (MGDx) in his utility to do the Win98se conversion, has a
bat file called "clone98" which will copy the entire Windows directory
to a new folder called "W98seOld", prior to making the changes to your
operating system. It uses some upgraded DOS tools to accomplish this.
Which includes LFN, a new Find, modified Attrib, XCopy, and some
others.

Then, if the conversion doesn't work for you for some reason, or you
don't like it, just boot into DOS, CD over into the "9!m" directory
and run "Unclon98.bat" to restore the original OS.

That's granting you answer "Y" when his program asks if you'd like to
clone your OS prior to changing it.

The Clone and Unclone works, I've done it.

Some PARTS of Win ME work better than the equivalent parts in Win98se.
The whole reason for Axcel's (MGDx's) little program. It only imports
certain parts of Win ME. The core files of Win98se, which
differentiates it from other versions, remains the same. And in fact
if yah go online to download further updates or upgrades from MS, if
any are forthcoming, you'd download the Win98se versions.

If you were to apply all of the changes listed, beginning to end,
you'll end up with some original Win98se components, some upgrades
from MS, some upgrades from 3rd parties, some Win ME components, and
one or two things from Win 2000.

If you go further, and apply some other changes on Axcel's web site,
you'' be adding some WinXP components.

Win ME was essentially MS's little "Oops". It did indeed contain some
improvements over Win98se, but also contained some glitches. Not to
mention Win 2000 came along shortly after. And Win ME ended up
somewhat like an unwanted step child.

Now, Win ME itself, I've never used in it's entirety. I only know one
fellow who has. And he still uses it, altho, with a bunch of fixes
loaded. Nose around Axcel's (MGDx's) site and you'll find his
suggested fixes to Win ME.

Well, now that you feel you have more time, a hobby is good.
Especially one where you might learn something new.

Maybe it'll keep you out of mischief. :-)

FWIW, I've been using the modified Win98se, and have had no
instability problems.

I just now double clicked on the link in your reply and pulled up the
site right away. <Shrug> Possibly the server hosting his site was
having problems when you tried.

You can do the download from these sites. I just now checked all
three and they were up and active.

Browse Axcel's main page, it lists enough stuff to keep you busy for a
long time, whether you're using Win 3.1, 95, 98, 98se, ME, 2000, or
XP.

Try downloading and then reading, in your spare time his downloadable

more about the operating systems.

His page with Win ME suggested updates and fixes

Win ME and Win98 Updates page.

As for not having Win98se. That I had. Bought and paid for. What I
didn't have was Win ME. Stopped by a local computer shop. Small time
little business, 3 or 4 guys who do business locally doing fixes,
repairs, upgrades or installing networks for those who don't know how.
They also sell a small selection of new and used stuff. I asked about
an original Win ME disk. Guy sold one to me for $10. Later, another
guy, who'd heard I was looking for such a disk, just gave me his. Had
gotten it with a computer he bought some time back. Didn't like ME,
it'd just been released and didn't have the fixes now available. So
he'd bought Win 2000 Pro and stuck the Win ME disk in the back of a
drawer.

I'd think Win98se disks shouldn't be too hard to come by. I've a few
floating around. Had my own. But as folks I know bought new
computers with new OS's on them, they were just tossing their old
Win98se disks. So I collected a few more.

As a bit of a hobby, I refurbish old PCs, load em up with an OS, toss
in a bunch of free software (some of which is very good, take a look
at Priceless Freeware ... http://www.pricelessware.org/ ), and then
give the puter and OS disks to some poor folks, etc.

Thanks, Bob. I'll have to get to a broadband connection to download

I do the same here, on the wrong side of the tracks. Net Zero gets
you a decent internet account for $10 a month, unlimited.

Lots of old and poor folks in my neighborhood on the net. The Gaming
Zone seems to get a lot of use by them. They tell me it beats
sitting in front of the tv, waiting to die.

Chuckle, I suppose that's one way to look at it.

Tho I don't know anyone with such a dim view of life.

In particular, most of the more elderly folk I know very simply enjoy
exchanging email with friends. Send each other pictures of the
grandkids. Hang around web sites devoted to that person's favorite
hobbies. And many of them do enjoy interactive games. Where player A
plays against player B.

I don't play games on a computer. But my wife does. And so do
several folk I know. Mostly card games, cribbage, that sort of thing.
Two individuals against each other, or pairs. They even engage in
tournaments.

Myself, when not doing other things, I'm almost always reading up on
things which interest me. Work and hobby items. Chuckle, just the
other day I was nosing around doing searches on a particular type of
test equipment I occassionally have use for. Came up with a hit on a
discussion between a couple fellows talking about the same sort of
item. And one of them had a rather unique suggestion for building
your own out of old scrap parts.

Of course, I had to immediately run out to the work shed, dig thru the
old stuff, and slap together a working model.

Sure beats watching the average pablum crap on the regular TV
channels.

Yep, unfortunately some of the downloads can take a while without
broadband.

But note my comments about the links I provided being links which will
allow you to download whole files, installables, onto your hard drive.
Which can be saved, written to CD, tape or a backup hard drive, etc.

I had two lines of thought when I purposely selected those links.

1. That way a person whose computer did a hard crash and who could not
connect to the Net had the items on hand to do a complete reinstall.

2. People with slower connections, while it might take a while to get
the files, should only have to do it once. Then save them to some
backup media. For when they're needed next time, if they are.

I have broadband. But do remember using dialup and know it's the pits
when downloading large files. And remember when things crashed on me
and neither broadband nor dial up was easily had. The very reason I
don't favor online automatic updating. I want the files downloaded
locally, so I KNOW I can use em in case of need, and the network is
down.

Thank you for the reply. This will give me something to do and I suspect
I'll learn a few things that I didn't know. I tried the hyperlink that I
thought didn't work and now it does work:-0. I'll work on the computer
until the weather turns and then it will be time to do more stuff
outside like till, fertilize, plant etc..

Hey Bob!
I've been wondering where you've gone off to...

I have a question... Whenever I delete a large number of files like
tmp files my computer will start lagging... how can I fix this?
I thought it was a memory issue but I'm currently running 384 MB RAM.
& it acts as if it uses every byte of it...

TIA.

Chuckle, well, I do actually do other things besides hang around on
news groups.

Have been sorta busy with work. And with getting the garden going.
Cleaning up the usual mess winter leaves behind in the geographic area
where I live. Opening up the lake cabin. Getting dock and boats into
the water. Doing annual servicing and tune ups of regular lawn
mowers, riding mower, weed whackers, chain saw, tiller, etc.

And in between times, in my leisure time, my wife keeps up her list of
Honey-Do's. ie Recently she's had me do a stack of computer repairs
and refurbs for various folks. Volunteered my ass to move the
household effects of a single gal my wife is friends with.
Volunteered me to fix the washing machine of another single mom she
knows. And one day recently, last week, she volunteered me to help
some financially challenged neighbors. Whose basement sewage lift
pump rolled over and died on em. Ummm ... I just love diving elbow
deep into honey-pits while watching crinkle-necked fish in their
natural habitat.

ROFLMAO !!!! Oh well, it had to be done.

Well, you provide precious little info for me to work on. It helps
when one mentions which operating system one is using.

In any event, what you describe sounds like the infamous "delete hang
up" that is well known about in Windows 98 SE with Internet Explorer
6.0 installed.

Hasn't a thing to do with the amount of RAM you have, Ike. As long as
you have the minimum, which in the case of Win98 is 32 MB, the OS will
work. More ram just makes it faster. Otherwise, when it runs short
of RAM, it switches to using swapping and virtual memory (in short, it
kind of uses your hard drive as a RAM replacement).

The delete hang up has to do with some faulty code (program code).
That exists when one loads IE6 into Win98se. Shows up when deleting a
LOT of items at one time.

If you don't know, Windows relies upon Window Explorer to do many of
the things it does. Explorer uses browseui.dll and browselc.dll to do
many of the things it does.

When one installs IE6 into Win98se, it replaces those two files with a
version that does not get along happily with other core parts of
Win98se. And many users will see the bug or glitch you are
mentioning.

The upgrade I mentioned in my original post will fix that, Ike.

If you're on dialup, and downloading is difficult and lenghty, you
don't have to download everything. And you don't have to find the
Windows ME cab files. Just make sure, if you're using Win 98 SE (and
Win 98 SE ONLY), that you update your OS with the latestest updates.
Download and install IE6. Download and install the Unofficial Windows
98se Service pack.

Then download and install MGDX's Win98se to ME program. But ONLY pick
options 4, 5, 6, and 7 for installation. You don't need the Win ME
cabs for that. All that's needed is in MGDx's package.

That should fix your problem.

Or .... if you'd rather. You can download Internet Explorer 5.5.

It can be found at http://browsers.evolt.org/
Along with new and old, archived versions of many web browsers. A
good site to visit if one wanted to grab a copy of a favored web
browser.

Install and use it rather than IE6. The browseui.dll and browselc.dll
installed and used by IE 5.5 plays well with Win98se. Without the
hang up doing a delete of a large number of files, or very large ones.

(One possible problem with this, some banks and such REQUIRE a person
to use IE6 or better to do bank transactions via Web.)

Or ..... COPY ... do not MOVE ... browseui.dll and browselc.dll from:
c:\windows\system\
where they usually reside, to a folder where you'll remember how to
find them. A good place would be:
c:\prgram files\internet explorer\

You must use COPY, while Windows is running, otherwise it'll either
refuse to allow this, or will crash and die on you. Remember, it's
ALWAYS using those two files.

Then download IE 5.5 from http://browsers.evolt.org/, and extract
browselc.dll and browseui.dll from the iew2k_1.cab file using WinZip
or similar program (I happen to use Power Archiver) and put those two
files somewhere easy to find but NOT into c:\windows\system\ because
if you do, Windows will object. Best to put them in the root
directory c:\

Then do a shutdown and reboot of Windows. On reboot, hit F8 key so
you pull up the boot menu which asks if want to boot into regular
Windows, Safe Mode, DOS ONLY, etc. Pick DOS ONLY.

DO NOT use the command line from within Windows !!!!!! You must get
into REAL DOS mode.

Now, simply Copy browselc.dll and browseui.dll to c:\windows\system

From the c:\> prompt, it's
copy browselc.dll c:\windows\system
copy browseui.dll c:\windows\system

Then reboot again, back into Windows as normal.

Problem should go away. This last method presumes you have IE6
installed and want to keep it. So it'll only replace the two troubled
files with ones from IE 5.5.

Don't want to download the whole of IE 5.5?

Here are direct links to download only the two required files:

http://www.frankprovo.com/browseui.dll

http://www.frankprovo.com/browselc.dll

They're available elsewhere, but Frank's site is one I know and trust.

Nope ... I am not some Windows Guru. I did not invent this fix. Nor,
for that matter did Frank Provo. At least I don't think he did. This
particular fix has been around a long time. About as long as IE6 has
been around.

Personally, I keep IE6 loaded. But don't use it always. More often I
use K-Meleon. A simpler, less featured cousin to Fire Fox. It serves
my usage well. While seemingly being more resistant to annoying Web
pages that want to make a person's browser do what the Web page
creator wants it to do. Like jump to some ad page, pop up ads, change
one's tool bar, etc.

But I've got to have IE6 loaded, and use it for certain things I do.
However, I only use it with known, trusted Web sites. And ones where
it's required.
