Yesterday, I purchased a song from Amazon and used their downloader software
to transfer the song into iTunes. The song is listed in the Music Library
section of iTunes, and it is checked. I have the sync configuration set to
sync only checked songs and to manually manage music and videos. I have
done syncs, but the song isn't transferred from the library into the phone.
What do I need to do to get the song from the library to the phone?
What song and by whom? We can probably just send you an MP3, solving this
iTunes nonsense....

As a general matter, I would like to be able to purchase songs, have them
downloaded to iTunes and synced with my phone.
you mention that itunes is set to manually manage music and videos.
that means it won't automatically sync -- you have to drag/drop them
yourself. if you want it to automatically sync, then disable that
option.

I don't think I understand what Manually Manage does. I thought it
prevented iTunes from automatically scanning my disk and sucking in songs.
Please explain the difference between Manual and Automatic management. The
iTunes help is poor.
Also, I have the option checked to sync only checked songs. But the song I
want to transfer is checked -- in the library section.
By the way, I find dragging items into the phone section of iTunes to be
troublesome. Often the cursor hangs as I approach the entry where I want to
drop it. It would be whole lot easier if you could just open a selection
list in iTunes and select the files you want to get.

right, that's what it does. with manually manage, *you* have to drag
the songs over whenever you want to add or delete music and videos.
unless you do that, nothing will get copied.

with automatic sync, itunes will automatically copy any music or videos
you may have added since the last time you synced. it will also update
playlists, such as most recently played or top rated songs. you can
also set it to copy particular playlists rather than the entire music
library, and you can also set it so that you must click the sync button
rather than have it automatically sync every time you connect it.

checking songs is an easy way to 'disable' a song for copying to the
ipod while keeping it in the music library.

that shouldn't happen.
you can't purchase songs. You are purchasing the right to listen to them,
without actual ownership, for your money.
As you have already paid for that right, it matters not where you get them
from as you are licensed to listen to them in perpetuity.
Wrong wrong wrong. Manually manage allows you to choose what songs you drag
onto your ipod/iphone etc. What you are talking about (itunes sucking in
all the songs) is a option in preferences->advanced->keep library organised
and the option to "copy files to library".

entirely different and unrelated feature.

OK, suppose you don't select to manually manage (I assume the opposite is
Automatic Management), what does it automatically synch to the phone? Is it
just items from the library sections, or is it going to find other files?

there are two options - sync everything, or sync selected playlists.
everything is everything, and selected playlists are the ones which you
choose, but they will still be automatically synced.
when you sync, either by syncing when attaching the ipod or by clicking
the sync button, the contents of the ipod will be updated to match
whatever you picked in itunes. if you want a song or video to not be
copied to the ipod, you can uncheck that particular item or create a
playlist that does not include it and sync that.
