I can update my iPhone apps one by one from the iPhone, but it seems
like it would be faster to update them via iTunes and then sync them to
the iPhone. Is there a way to do that yet?

I can't remember whether 7.x did but 8 certainly does.

You didn't say which version of iTunes that you are using. With iTunes 8 on
a Mac, it is quite easy. Go into the Applications category. At the bottom of
the page, there is a hot spot labeled "Check for Updates."

In the Library list, select "Applications". Click the link at the
bottom to check for updates. Follow the prompts.

I'm using iTunes 8.0.2 for Mac. I don't see a hot spot for "Check for
Updates" on the Applications tab when my iPhone is connected to iTunes.
On the lower right, there's a Sync button, and on the left there are
icons for adding a playlist, showing or hiding album art, etc.

Am I looking in the right place?

No, you need to look on the Library sidebar - Applications is between
Audiobooks and Radio

Under Library in the sidebar, I show:

Music
Movies
TV Shows
Podcasts
Radio
Ringtones

...but no Applications. Is there something I need to do to get
Audiobooks and Applications to show up there?

I just got Applications to show up in the Library. I clicked File->Add
to Library, found the folder that contained my iPhone apps, and added
it. It's there now, including the "Check for Updates" hot spot.

Thanks very much to all here for your help!

Yes I go to Apps, then hit update all... then sync.

Itunes Preferences - General Pane

Check the categories you want to appear.

I suspect that, unless you're about to sync anyway, it's actually
quicker to click App Store on your iPhone and then click "Update All"
on your iPhone.
