Android nears 75% of new smartphone sales

Huwei: 4.4 3.6
ZTE: 3.8 3.1


Note: by quantity sold, Apple is up 16% over the year ago quarter -
Samsung is up 59%

BBerry: 3.0 6.8
MS: 2.9 1.9

Note: Android unit sales are up a whopping 87%
over the quarter a year ago.

If you were to limit it to only phones sold with the latest Android
version, you would find the number much lower. A lot of low end Android
phones are sold with versions as far back as 2.x because of the slow CPU
etc.

The big loser in this is Nokia which used to control the low end of the
phone business.

Not sure Apple will want to produce an el-cheapo plastic iPhone sold at
$50. And if it cannot compete at the very low end, it might as well
stick to mid and high ends.

If Apple can get a 30% or higher GM on devices, then it's worthwhile for
them. Apple selling a narrow range of products for a high GM is what
makes Apple a huge money maker. With the huge cash reserves they have
they can afford to both experiment with new products and cut them off if
unprofitable.

all Android phoes are considered "smartphones" even the el-cheapo $50
ones made by Huawei and ZTE for developping nation markets. And this
includes phones currently sold with old Android versions because of
underpowered CPUs.

BTW, a big announcement today from Google:

They will sell a Samung Galaxy S4 loaded with Google's version of
Android for which Google will provide software upgrades. Google will
sell the phone unlocked and unlocked bootloaded too.

One aspect that came out: Android is a Java engine for applications (as
opposed to a Unix environment).

Google has had many legal problems with Oracle, the owner of Java.

That's not clear from the linked page. IAC, an Android phone is an
Android phone.
