Will an absolutely dead pram battery prevent an iMac G3 (DV) from
starting up?

Pressing the power key produces no visible or audible response. My son
says that after being idle for a longish period, it just wouldn't start
up.

that's possible, but keep in mind that power supply failures were
common for those macs.

by the way, this is the iphone group. the mac groups are down the hall,
to the left.

Yeah, I noticed after I posted that I was in the wrong group.
I apologize. Follow-ups set to comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc

They is likely a key combination or other method to zap the PRAM memory
during a power up.

But if you don't ever get to the power up chime, I would suspect poorly
seated RAM cards, or dust etc inside that is causing a short or whatever.

If you don't get the chime, it is a hardware problem. The chime happens
at hardware level and way before the computer tries to look for an OS to
load from a disk.

None. It never started up again. A few internal voltage checks indicate
a power supply failure.

Follow-ups set.

Not likely. The main symptom of a dead PRAM battery in these iMacs is the
clock that will reset back in time. If you keep the iMac plugged in and that
outlet receives power, then the clock will remain accurate even with a dead
battery.
