I purchased one of the first iPhones and the microphone died within a
year. I thought I could continue using it like an iPod but it turns
out that without a sim card it will not activate.

If I add a non-usable sim card can I then integrate with another
application other than iTunes?

Any suggestions?

1) Research "hacktivating", it's potentially possible depending on your
firmware and tolerance for bullshit.

2) IIRC, once activated it should still work if you toss in a valid but
deactivated SIM and leave the phone in airplane mode. This may not be
universally true on the very first generation phones though, I've not
personally tried, but it works on later generation phones.
