I'm in the latter group, and I haven't figured that one out.
When you're in the middle of a phone call you can quit the phone app,
but the call stays active. If you're on a 3g network you can then start
of Safari or some other app that needs internet access, and use it
without interrupting the call.

So you can continue the conversation while you access a website?
Or email?
good to know, thanks

Sure! I can even hook the person on the phone with the person on
Skype....a sort of mobile telephone exchange for 3-way conference calling!
I made a cable up to connect the Motorola V6m's 1/8" 3-circuit speaker/mic
to the speaker/mic of the Samsung netbook. Works great!
They both can also hear daytraderradio.com's running commentary of the
market during the trading day so we can discuss what's going on and share
making money/trades between us....lowered in background under the main
conversation and instantly increased in gain at a click if something
important comes up.
The phone's on Pageplus/Verizon. The netbook's on a $40 unlimited Cricket
aircard.
Your turn....

not everyone has skype. you have to pay when calling to or from a
normal phone.
Oh, it's HUGE!
My last Skype OUT was $28/YEAR
Each of my two Skype IN numbers, one in SC and one in London, UK, was $24.
The one in London is one digit off a great little pub whos phone calls I
get by accident are MOST entertaining. I get to meet some really great
people through it....(c;]
Both, of course, are unlimited service. Skype Out contract in the USA
covers USA, Canada, AK, PR, HI. Talk for hours and noone complains.

which is $76 per year total, or over $6 per month. so much for being
free.
Skype and Skype calls, including file swapping, texting, video calls,
conference calls, everything is FREE.
Connecting Skype to the TELEPHONE SYSTEM is what costs money. INTERCONNECT
IS NEVER FREE on any system.
Now, be a good boy and fuck off.

Yes, but Skype actually is cheaper to carriers than regular calls.
Here in Austria, interconnection fees from one cellular provider to
another is more expensive than internet connection.
That's the reason why my carrier, www.drei.at, is offering Skype for
free to all their customers. They even run ads for it.
So they make money when other carriers route traffic _to_ them
(interconnection), but pay less to route Skype calls _from_ their own
network to the internet then they would have to pay to other carriers
for regular calls.
