I'm no expert, but it sure sound like a virus type thing...not sure if
getting a virus is even really possible.

That's obvious.

No, its VERY unlikely to JUST affect the slider and nothing else.

Corse its possible.

it's not possible unless jailbroken and even then it's rare.

only if jailbroken, and even then, not likely.

Wrong.

Wrong, as always.

Irrelevant to whether its possible.

then it's definitely not a virus.

take the phones to an apple store and have them diagnose it for free.
if it's a simple fix they'll even fix it for free.

It should be obvious I'm no expert, especially since I stated that
myself. But so far, I put a theory out there that has not been proven
wrong yet. I find it interesting that it is affecting two phones the
same way, that is what leads me to believe it is software based. You
are correct in saying it is unlikely, but I haven't heard anything
that is likely either.

It was.

That would have been obvious even if you had not.

No one bothered to prove something that
basic, essentially because if it really was a virus,
it wouldn't just affect the slider and nothing else.

> I find it interesting that it is affecting two phones the same way,

Yes, that's certainly important information.

> that is what leads me to believe it is software based.

Sure, but that's an entirely separate matter to the point I was
making, that its very unlikely to be a VIRUS, because a VIRUS
is very unlikely to affect JUST the slider and nothing else.

> You are correct in saying it is unlikely, but

One obvious possibility is that is a quirk of an update
to the software that only affects a subset of iphones.
A subset in the sense of a particular hardware detail
that is only seen in a subset of even that model.

Its certainly possible that the initial setup phase
that the software goes thru when the iphone is
starting from scratch has a problem with some
of the hardware that sees the slider inactive
while its having that difficult and once it has
decided to say just ignore that, everything else
works fine.

I agree, the update thing makes sense.. The only thing I don't agree
with is a virus won't affect only one thing. Maybe it's because it
happened to me once, OK granted it was a Windows machine....but I got
a virus that did only one thing. It disabled my CD/DVD drive...nothing
more. In fact, that's why I didn't think it wasn't a virus at the
time, because it just acted like a broken drive. Granted, I do agree
it's unlikely....but it did happen. But then again...I did say it was
Windows ;-)

I didn't say that, I said that a virus won't just affect the
SLIDER essentially because the slider doesn't actually
do anything much that's going to be affected by a virus.

Sure, but this isnt even disabling the slider, its just
seeing it do nothing for a while and then it works fine.

Very hard to see what a virus could be doing
to produce that detail of the symptom seen.

Sure, you can certainly get some quite odd effects
that have you kick yourself when you work out what
it is, but I still don't see that with a virus and the SLIDER.

I have just noticed with my iphone 5 that just after
you turn the phone on from a power off, there is
a very short time during which the slider does not
work. Presumably that's longer on your 3gs because
of the lower horsepower cpu in it, so is likely the
only effect you are seeing.
