Tonight I went to Folk Night at The Ship Pub here in St. John's,
Newfoundland, Canada.

The headliners were Matthew Hornell and The Diamond Minds.

Matthew Hornell played a solo set (on acoustic guitar and vocals)0
to start the night, in which he did a few songs that the band
doesn't play much anymore, plus some covers.

Then there was an hour long open mic set with performances by
Ben Rigby on banjo and vocals, Graham Wells (accordion) +
Duncan Cameron (bouzouki) + David Clarke (fiddle) on a set
of jigs, a song (Star of Logy Bay), and a set of reels, Andrew
O'Brien, and Stephen (I forget his last name).

Then to end the night Matthew Hornell and The Diamond Minds
played a more rocking set though they said it was still toned
down for folk night from what they would do for a rock show.

I was pleasantly surprised by Matthew Hornell; he is a good
songwriter and player and fairly good singer.

I think they are playing The Rock House on Saturday.

Next week (Nov. 25) at folk night there is a traditional dance
night with music provided by the Auntie Crae Band (Stan
Pickett, Andrew Lang, Doug Baggs and Rick West). Frank
Maher is temporarily not playing with them until he gets a
specialist to sort out his problem with arthritis in his arms.

Folk night now starts at 9:30 p.m. instead of 9 p.m.

It was a great success. Andrew Lang was among the dancers
so he didn't play, but Derek Pelley joined them on bass. The
Auntie Crae Band hosts a session every Tuesday at lunchtime
at Auntie Crae's food shop on Water Street in St. John's, and
that is how they got their name. Ford Elms acted as dance
caller and instructor but most of the dancers were experienced.

But the open mic set had only one act: Graham Wells,
Duncan Cameron and Dave Clarke again this week. So
if you are a musician you are welcome to come play the
open mic set (there are up to 4 spots).

Next week, Dec. 2, the headline act is Sherry Ryan, and
once again Folk Night at The Ship Pub is now starting
at 9:30 p.m. and ending by midnight.
