Not an issue!Important to carry with you a valid US green card all the time. You should file the Form I-90 in order to get replacement for your green card. For a green card holder while permanent status is permanent, the identification which proves permanent residency status – the green card – is not. Permanent residents need to keep a green card with them at all times to prove their permanent residency and most green cards are only issued for ten years and so you should renew green card. If you want to become a citizen based on your own status you can do so through the naturalization process by applying for US citizenship. You will have to submit the US citizenship application. To eligible for naturalization you must be 18 years old and should have been a permanent resident for more than 5 years. You also need to fulfill all other qualification requirements like continuous residence, physical presence, state stay and good moral character.... more »

Applicants applying for US Citizenship must have maintained continuous residence in the United States for at least five years immediately preceding the applicant's filing for US citizenship with form N-400. Continuous residence is not the same thing as physically being present in the United States. An applicants must maintain status as a legal permanent resident (green card holder), but does not necessarily have to be physically in the United States to accomplish this. After a year in US as a green card holder in case for example you need to stay outside US for employment reasons then you can file Form N-470 to preserver residence. Trips outside US as a green card holder should not exceed 180 days per trip. If you are going to stay outside US for more than a year remember to apply for reentry permit and get it approved before leaving US.... more »
