Ok, 2 questions. How old does your child have to be to learn to blow
his/her nose and how do you teach this wonderful skill??? SNIFF, SNIFF.
Aaargh!! On a related note, I sure wish I'd paid more attention to the
thread on cleaning up the inside of a car after a massive vomiting episode :-(
I'll spare the details for the faint-of-stomach.

Well, Stefan has been able to blow his nose on command (boy, it sounds like I'm
talking about a dog or something :-) ) since he was around 15 or 16 months old.

We didn't have any problems teaching him, because he loves to imitate both of
us and we've been blowing our noses quite a lot this year. :-(

We just placed a tissue over his nose and said "Blow" and he did. Never did
try to blow through his mouth, which I understand is what most kids do.
Actually, it's taken us quite sometime to teach him to blow through his mouth.
(needs to do this to blow bubbles with soap and wand.)

I've also been told Stefan was incredibly young to already know how to blow
his nose, so I wouldn't get to worked up about it if your child can't.

I never learned. Oh, sure, my mother tried to get me to blow
my nose, but I never would. I hated it then, and I still do. Yuck!

My oldest son actually gags everytime he has to blow his nose - he is
so repulsed by it.

Tim learned to blow his nose at about 16 months, no problem. With Anna
(now 2 years, 3 mos) we are still waiting. Her favorite trick is th
make a long "F" sound. She tried to blow out her candles on her birthday
cake that way, too!

As one who has been plagued with sinus infections, I am very
experienced at blowing my nose, but just recently have learned
that blowing my nose may be contributing to my sinus infections.
I was told to SNIFF the mucus in, let it go down my throat, then
expel it from there if necessary. Blowing gently is okay, but
forceful blowing with one nostril held closed can force some of
the mucus into your sinuses, setting you up for a sinus
infection. (NOW they tell me, at age 39!!)

Normally, thin mucus flows down your throat everyday, at a rate
of about a quart a day, to clean dust etc out of your nose and
throat. When you have a cold, the mucus thickens and clogs, but
going down your throat is actually the more normal route.

Both my 2 could blow their noses at about 15 mths too - I really think
it is due to the fact that Mum and Dad blow their noses alot :-)
(allergies big time for both of us!) I guess it just seemed so natural
to them :-) In fact my hubby has even taught Matthew the "Farmer Blow"
that only Men seem to have enough back pressure to do - YUK!!

Jordan is 18 months old next week. Yikes! About 5 months
ago he noticed his grandfather blowing his nose and has
been imitating him ever since. At first we thought this
was sorth of funny....this little toddler holding his
hand up to his nose and making blowing sounds.....now it
doesn't seem so funny. Sometimes he actually blows air
out of his nose!!!! Mostly this isn't a problem....but
sometimes......yuck. We've actually started giving him
a kleenex when he starts doing this....he thinks that's
neat. Now, I think....I think....he's only doing it when
he can get his hands on a kleenex.

So.....at our house the answer to your question about how
old before they learn to blow their nose is....about
16 months old! My brother, on the other hand, still doesn't
blow his!

Cheers!

This may be an old wives tale, but........

I've seen all these posts about kids blowing their nose at 15 months.
My son could, too. But I was told to discourage it because at that
age the tubes that lead from the nasal passage to the ear are very
small and a small amount of mucus could clog them and cause an ear
or sinus infection. So we waited until he was just over 2 to encourage
any blowing of his nose. Someone may want to ask their doctor about
this one. It's just what I was told from his daycare mom.

Gross...GROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSS! Icky yuck! A quart a day! Dust,
mucus...thickens...clogs. I don't think I will ever be able to swallow again.

Ezra has been able to blow his nose for awhile. This morning he was watching
his poppa brush his teeth. Ravi has a habit of clearing out his throat in the
morning and spitting it out in the toilet. Well, Ez picked this up this
morning and went aroun thhe house saying "raach, raach, tooey". We thought it
was funny and laughed about it. Well, Ez and I went to the grocery store
this morning. All of a sudden Ezra really cleared his throat and then (argh!)
he really, yes really spit it out!!! Ok so I need to dry clean my coat soon.
The mother of two standing nearby split a gut laughing. Ez just
kept doing it. "Please honey don't spit!" Momma says. Baby
smiles, laughs and "raach, raach, tooey" again!!

Oh the wonders of parenthood.

Gee, now I don't feel so bad, thanks Deantha!

My husband is constantly clearing his throat and spitting--something I've
always found disgusting, but he evidently has a lot of mucus drainage and
needs to. Well, he also does this after brushing his teeth and Stefan, our
son, who always wants to do whatever mom and dad are doing, does the same
thing after brushing his teeth---luckily though, he hasn't actually mastered
the spitting part---

This past week or so he has started to do it out in public, usually right
after dad has done it. Really gross. I just tell him not to and that it's
icky. (he doesn't understand gross, and he thinks yeeeww is funny) :-)

My eldest's pediatrician told us that one of the reasons that he
only got one ear infection (when he was almost 3 years old) was
because he knew how to blow his nose at an early age and thus got
rid of the fluid that would have eventually caused an ear infection!

He did say that we should take care so that he doesn't blow too hard
and force that fluid into his ears.

If it makes anyone who has older kids who can't blow their noses yet
feel better, I couldn't even stand the sound of someone blowing his/her
nose until I was 16! (I'm 17 almost 18 now) It actually made me gag and
almost puke. :6 I got over it really fast when I got pneumonia last
spring....Now it doesn't bother me at all. :) Give your kids time, to
a lot of kids the mere concept of blowing noses is sickening! BLECH!
