If you have The Learning Channel, chances are you've seen the Birth Story
show, right? Lots of pastel, soft-focus shots; people in labor that
doesn't look too bad; happy endings; nothing too gross; soft, tinkly
music; people smiling through tears.

So the other night, I had this bad dream about being in labor for a really
long time and it just went on and on and it was a nightmare. When I woke
up, I couldn't sleep, so I went downstairs and turned on the tv. Lo and
Behold, The Learning Channel was playing the Birth Story (or is it
Birthing Story). So I think "great! this will calm my fears" and I watch
this woman give birth, and it doesn't dawn on me that she's screaming, and
delivering in this tiny room full of medical equipment, and there's no
music or soft colors until she finishes delivering a baby that is
stillborn. And I'm still not clued in. And then they switch to this
other mother whose baby is HIV positive and a preemie, and they're
wheeling in the incubator so she can touch the baby's hand. And finally I
realize: This is not the Birthing Story! This is Maternity Ward, a
*completely different show*!!

So, fair warning: don't confuse the two. They're very different.

Slightly wiser,

Virginia

I've seen both shows and you aren't kidding. They're like night and day.
Personally I don't care for Baby Story. Seen it for so long now and ALL the
repeats. Sheesh.

I don't get the point of Maternity Ward. It's not educational at all to me.
And I certainly don't find it entertaining. I've seen it once and that was
enough for me.

I made that mistake one night a few weeks back. For some reason, I wasn't
able to turn it off either. My husband walked in, watched for a few
minutes and asked me why I was doing this to myself? Mind you, he stayed
and watched too. We were riveted to this show! LOL. A while later, he
looked at me and asked me why I was doing this to him! It was really sad.

I ended up watching it the other day while I was folding newborn t-
shirts and onesies (which are the cutest things on earth for babies
btw) and was a mess by the time is was over. I was crying and nervous
and got back all of my c-section fears. I'm going to skip it from now
on I think.
