I've seen a few posts regarding finishing a college education while pregnant
or with small children, and I thought I'd share something I'm doing:

A lot of colleges offer distance-learning classes as options. Even if
you're enrolled in a program already, you might be able to take one and
transfer the credit (ask your advisor). They work like an independant study
course - lectures are often on video-tape, and you're responsible for
submitting written assignments as you would for a regular class. The only
difference is that you're not in an actual classroom, you communicate with
your instructor via mail or e-mail, and you can submit assignments the same
way. Some classes require that you take your midterm and final exams at a
local community college or university - which is no big deal. The costs are
often less than a regular college class, although credit earned is the same.

I'm about 15 credits from a second degree, and am currently taking an art
history course thorough University of Kansas. I have 9 months to finish
it, which is definately do-able with a baby. I'm also planning to register
for another through Brigham Young University. I'm an art student, and
having the option to take the required history courses (which are mostly
reading) this way is great - lets me keep everything on track *and* care for
my son.

I am also currently studying via distance education from Pennsylvania, I'm
in a certificate program and half way through my first course, so far it has
been good. Its really nice to work at your own pace.
My midterm is next week!

best wishes

My wife is pregnant with our third child (we have a 4 yr old and a 2 yr old).
Even though I am just a dad, I feel its very important to spend as much time as
I can at home, but still advance in my career so I can provide a good life for
the kids.
I take classes online, as a matter of fact, accessing a newsgroup is part of my
assignment. It is extremely convenient, and I can work on my courses while
everyone is asleep or otherwise occupied. If you are interested, I can give you
more information about the school I "attend". Its actually an accredited
college and the program will allow you to complete most of the courses toward a
BS/BA. Its also reasonably priced compared to other colleges in the area.

Bridget, that's very informative. I'm very interested in doing that
being that I haven't finished college yet and am now a SAHM. How do you
go about finding which schools offer distance-learning?

I am a distance learning student too, I take online classes and
telecourse through the university right here in my home town and they
even are covered by my pell grant, I always encourage any mother who
wants to continue her education to check into such programs out there ,
you dont have to put off your dreams forever just because your a mother
of a young one, !!!
