On the misc.consumers board there has been much discussion about the
shady habits of sears. For example, many of their promotional deals
specify that its good for the first shot only. Typically this shot is
taken quickly and is pretty bad, often a profile. Much higher prices are
then quoted for the next shots which of course are spent more time on and
are then much better. Most people who posted said they really didn't
like sears at all and would reccomend going to JC pennys.

We've been using Sears for the past 8 years and while they don't do a GREAT
job, they do an ok one relative to the price you pay (package deal, of
course). Recently I've found that the best way to deal with them is to
state that you are only going to buy the package and make sure you get the
best possible shot for that one. We actually did buy a picture of my
daughter alone that was not in the package this time, first time we ever did
something like that, but it was just a really good shot.
Amazingly, I find that my son (5yo) takes the best pictures with the school
photographer. Maybe it's that he is happy at school, but we just got his
pix yesterday and they were great. Of course, they charge big bucks
(relative to Sears package deal, at least). Argh.

But they have the PC display now so when the picture is taken you can see
what it looks like and if you don't like it you just tell them so and
they'll take another, and another (within reason, altho I have not have
problems asking for a few more). When you're satisfied, you tell them to
save it and THAT is your first picture. You can also tell them to zoom in
more if you really want.. I did that last time since I noticed that the
initial picture was always further away than the subsequent ones they wanted
you to pay extra for. JC Penney may be a better offer but since Sears is a
mile from my house and Penney's is 30 minutes, I choose Sears.

However, I would use their new custom sittings rather than the big picture
deals (Unless you actually need ALL of those pictures that they give you.)
They advertise it for $8 a page, but I am always getting coupons for $5 a
page. You pick your backgrounds, poses, and props. They take six shots, you
decide if you want to keep them or not with the portrait preview screen. You
then pick any page quantity of any shot (or none if you don't like them). A
page is a 10x13, 8x10, 2 5x7s, 4 3x5s, 12 wallets, or a bunch of the minis.
You also get a color proof sheet of all the shots. You can even change your
selections once you get home (until the cut off day). You can also make
appoints for the custom sittings (you can't for the package deals).
They are still just your basic department store shots, but to me they are your
best buy.
By the way - Penneys is okay too, maybe a little more expensive, but still a
decent buy.
Good luck,
Leah

: ordering practices. At Penneys, they order a set package for
: you without any input, you then purchase your pictures from
: their selections and if you need anything beyond that it counts
: as a 'reorder' for which they charge $28 a sheet. Sears allows
Does this vary from one store to the next? We've had our kids photos
done at Penneys for over 6 years now. Before they had the instant
viewing of the poses, we didn't have a choice on which shot was used for
the tiny pictures, but could choose what we wanted for the rest of the
package. For the last few years, the stores we've had the photos taken
at had the instant viewing and we selected the pose we wanted for the
package deal. We've used 2 different stores for the pictures.
Coupons seem to arrive about the time we need more pictures for either an
$8 package or $5/sheet with a mixture of poses.
In the past, Sears wouldn't take appointments for their sittings and I
didn't want to sit around with a couple of children until they would
finally have time for us. I haven't bothered to call them for a few
years, so don't know if this has changed or not.
