oral thrush

I have a 10 week old daughter who is exclusively breastfed. She has a bad
case of oral thrush - I have been giving her Nystatin drops for 10 days and
if anything the thrush has got worse over that time. I am using cream on
myself and as far as I can tell I'm clear of the thrush.
She's been really grumpy over the last 25 hours, hasn't slept as well and is
demanding feeding a lot more often, which I'm doing. I put her to the
breast and she fusses, pulls away after a few deep sucks and seems
uncomfortable. I'm not sure if this is down to the thrush or if she's
having a growth spurt.
I am planning on seeing the doctor on Monday to see if there is an
alternative medication that she can have to clear up the thrush but is there
anything I can do now? I am reluctant to give her Calpol but if she screams
through the night I will. I am assuming that teething gels will only make
matters worse?

If you can find a health food store, you can get acidopholus capsules, break
them open and let your baby suck the powder off your finger one or two times
a day - acidopholus is the "good bacteria" that help fight off yeast
infections and generally live in the gut. You can also try to find
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE), and use a solution of 10-20 drops in an ounce
of distilled water and swab it in her mouth with a Q-tip once an hour while
she's awake. Both of these things are supposed to topically kill off the
yeast and fungus in the mouth. But NEITHER worked for me - I am in my 9th
or 10th week of dealing with thrush, and have tried many, many things so
far, including Gentian Violet (GV), which seemed to work at first, and then
stopped. Pretty much everything seemed to work at first but then stopped.
I wish you better luck, because this is a real pain!

What I found most helpful with thrush was in conjunction with using the
chemical treatments was to cut out as much sugar as possible out of my
diet. This was hard with a young baby as I tended to eat ahem... a fair
bit of chocolate. However this was the only thing that seemed to work.
I had several bouts of thrush and at the end I would not use medication
at all but just eat no sugar for a week or so.

laundry in hot water with vinegar in the final rinse cycle. Plus I
started using dandruff shampoo on me. Doing those things helps kill
off all the yeast growing in the environment and giving off spores
which makes it alot easier for you all to actually beat the thrush.
I had alot of trouble beating thrush before I tried these things, and
it just poof went away like magic once I started doing these things.

Nystatin was rubbish for me.. Daktarin Orange flavoured oral gel is
fantastic.. works really quickly and tastes nice.

The first five days without sugar are the worst. After that the urge to
drop by the candybox diminishes a lot.

Took 3 weeks to work the first time, and only worked for 3 days for me
the second time (current). Think I'll just live with it! Does anyone
know what thrush rash looks like under baby's neck/chest?

Alexander got a yeast rash in his neck folds & armpit creases. It looked
like a white discharge & if you wiped that away it was red underneath.
Sometimes the creases would bleed a little. First I tried Lotrimin, an
over-the-counter fungal treatment. Then I tried two drops of tea tree oil in
1/4 cup of almond oil, which my midwife recommended. When I went to the
doctor I was given Nystatin, which worked & then stopped working. What
finally worked was putting a bit of Caldasene powder on my hand and wiping
it in the creases so that they would definitely stay dry. Now it isn't a
problem.

My baby had a yeast infection on her ear and behind it. It looks like
really dry skin, but lotion doesn't help. She cried when I messed with
it, so I figure it was painful. I was afraid it was eczema at first.
When we took her to the doctor for The Cold That Will Never End (she's
had it since 10/21!), he said to try clortrimazole (Lotrimin), and it
cleared it up within a couple days.

Yeast IS a fungus.

Are you trying the various remedies sequentially or all at the same time?

Mostly sequntially. Tried (for dd):
-Nystatin alone
-Diflucan alone for 2 weeks, then tried acidopholus powder and GSE swab
while still taking Diflucan for another week (I also started on acidopholus
during the Diflucan trial)
-Nystatin again alone (Though I continue to take acidopholus throughout)
-GV 1% solution in dd's mouth while I continued with just vinegar rinses and
lotrimin lotion on my nipples
-GV 2% solution on us both
-Now am back to Nystatin, as it is what has seemed to work the best - I am
now swabbing it into her mouth on her tongue etc rather than using the
dropper to put in a whole lot. I'm trying to get it to her 4-6 times a day
(or more), as the more frequently you use it, the more effective it is
supposed to be.
So - any thoughts, given the above info? I am all ears!

I would combine treatments - gentian violet AND clotrimazole on the
nipples, while ALSO treating with nystatin, GSE and maybe Diflucan. If
you can get the live, refrigerated acidophilus from a health food store,
or get plain organic yogurt, it'll probably work better than the dry
powder form.
You may already be doing these, but also important: cutting back on
sugar in your diet, washing everything that comes in contact with the
affected areas with hot water and vinegar, and avoid using Lansinoh on
the nipples.
