The Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health (CATCH) was developed and proven effective (results published in the Journal of the American Medical Association) in improving children's physical activity and nutrition levels. The impact of this program can only be realized through population-based diffusion. This dissertation project includes three phases: 1) reviews the natural history of the diffusion of CATCH in Texas, 2) develops and pilots a model for the expedited diffusion of CATCH, and 3) implements and evaluates that model in a large-scale comparative design among three of the 20 Texas Education Service Center regions. To date, over 600 schools have adopted the program.

LEAH is an interdisciplinary leadership education program funded by a grant from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to promote the development of integrated solutions to adolescent health problems. Professionals in medicine, nursing, nutrition, social work, psychology and now public health collaborate to address a broad range of teen issues in a number of classroom and practice settings. My role as the first public health fellow to participate in LEAH has been to offer perspective on generating population-based solutions to adolescent health problems, and also to bring a better understanding of the scope of clinical practice issues to my own research and program development.

The Adolescent Smoking Cessation project was a K-07 grant awarded to Dr. Laura McCormick for the purpose of the development and pilot of a survey instrument measuring behavioral and cognitive indicators of adolescent smoking acquisition and cessation. Primary job responsibilities included survey item development, school recruiting, survey implementation and data management. Post-employment responsibilities included data analysis and report writing.
