Responsibilities and Achievements


Served as site landscape architect providing design, technical assistance, and quality control for the Project Manager.

Planned and programmed the Project's annual, seasonal and monthly goals for the landscape development.

Trained landscape contractor in efficient management and logistical techniques that saved over $200,000 in the first six months of implementation by cross-training workers in multiple installation skills. Increased productivity by breaking staff into smaller, more talented teams.

Supervised daily landscape contractor and his team of 10 crews and various subcontractors responsible for earthworks, road building, rockery installation, and material handling, over 300 total workers of 13 different nationalities.

Developed new and unique applications of erosion control materials (geotextiles) and of horticultural techniques.

Negotiated with suppliers over $2,000,000 of plants and other materials. Managed and reviewed an $8,000,000 landscape budget. Conducted negotiations with Israeli and Arab authorities for the acquisition and relocation of hundreds of aged olive trees.

Served as consultant to the landscape maintenance division. Developed extensive knowledge of arid climate plants.

Served in the capacity of Project Manager for the first phase completed in 1996 coordinating the finish work and final detailing of construction, masonry, plumbing and electrical work as well as landscape. Delivered project two weeks ahead of schedule despite rainy weather.

Mentored successor and turned final phase of project over to him upon completion of service.

Gardenmakers, Inc. continues today as a design/build firm with Norman Johnson , founding editor of Garden Design magazine, as principal.

Representative projects include updating the image of service stations: A unified approach to landscaping for a national company (Exxon Corporation, Memphis, Tennessee), planning a traditional garden for a historic home in today's economy (Dr. and Mrs. Hurley Knott residence, Birmingham, Alabama), developing a species (iris) garden for a public botanical garden (The Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Birmingham, Alabama), planning a 40-acre thoroughbred race horse farm for utility and show (Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Jones, Montevallo, Alabama)


Responsibilities and Achievements

Served as principal designer responsible for site analysis, concept development, preliminary design and coordination of working drawings.

Managed a staff of five clerical, drafting and crew supervisors.

In capacity of project manager coordinated junior landscape architects and scheduled production.

Supported firm's public relations efforts through public lectures and managing advertising.

Served as primary financial officer managing budget and assets and supervising payroll for over ten years.

Southern Living is a thirteen-state regional life-style magazine with a current circulation of over 2,000,000 subscribers. The editorial intent of the garden/landscape department is to illustrate the beauty and utility of excellent landscape design at the residential scale, to familiarize the homeowner with diverse plants and garden techniques, and to advocate ecological and other planning issues. Working with the region's best landscape architects, the magazine's editors travel extensively and directly report on the latest trends in landscape architecture as they impact its readership.


Responsibilities and Achievements
Planned and submitted for review seasonal article ideas.
Designed 'how-to' articles and produced copy and photos.
Prepared nearly 15,000 words a month for publication in a lively, deadline-driven environment.

Assisted photographers in styling photo shoots.

Visited and reported on nearly every public garden in the South including Cheekwood, Longwood, Biltmore, Bellingrath, Callaway.

Traveled over 50,000 miles a year.
