States starting to escheat unannuitized VAs?
|
| |
I had an interesting conversation with Vanguard today and
wanted to pass it along...
My mother has a variable annuity with Vanguard. It is not
annuitized and there is no desire for it to be annuitized.
The other day she got a letter from Vanguard stating that
unless she took action Vanguard would be annuitizing the VA.... more »

Stock Screeners sabotoged
|
| |
Arrgghh, I can't believe a major stock brokerage has been giving me mangled stock screen results. In such a target rich environment, you need something to sift thru the chaff. Have you ever looked closely at what passes the screen and whether some are totally illogical? More importantly that likely means good stuff is failing to come thru the screen... a nightmare for someone who has switched from professional fund or etf managers to self direction.... more »

pension plan weasel language?
|

Should I be alarmed at the following info contained in my former employer's Annual Funding Notice for Retirement Plan?
With MAP-21 rates, fund is at 101%, without it is at 86%, for 2012. Whatever that means.
"This is a temporary supplement to your annual funding notice. It is required by a new federal law... more »

Cash in life insurance policy?
|
| |
I have an AXA Equitable life insurance policy (modified premium variable whole life) with a face value of $100,000 and a net cash surrender value of $61,000. I am 66 years old & in good health. No dependents. Does it make sense to keep this policy or cash it in and invest the money into something else? My cost basis for this policy was $35,000 and I have owned it for 20 years.... more »

Porfolio composition discussion
|
| |
In light of David's recent post (I am not the poster he was replying
to) I figured I'd put up part of my asset class breakdown for discussion,
ripping apart, etc.
My personal methodology is to first split things into fixed-income
and non-FI. The non-FI piece is split into domestic non-FI and... more »

Non invest financial plan
|
| |
Hi Thanks for this group. While this isn't the most logical group to ask about non invest financal
plans, can anyone suggest who to contact for it? Even CPAs and CFPs seem
unnterested if not investing in stocks and bonds. At my age, setting up
safe tax and retirement plan, is increaingly important.... more »

Avoiding stocks that refinance
|
| |
This may not be plannable, but I wonder how one can avoid stocks that get large price setbacks by kind of refinancing themselves. Not sure of the terminology, but some companies issue a lot of new stock or bonds and while it may be seen as good for the company, the original shareholders either have to share future profits with new shareholders or be burdened with higher leverage via debt. Maybe the money is to acquire some other company or expand into unknown areas which is hard to evaluate fundamentally.... more »

Lessons from American Greed tv series?
|
| |
CNBC is desperately trying to create tv series to fill in the time between live market coverage, and I would say American Greed is the only one that halfway works. We might consider what the lessons are from their true tales. My takeaway is much of the greed was on the victims side in expecting to be able to beat the system (broadly available rates of return) by hooking up with a local shark. Of course the program endlessly weeps for the folks who put their entire savings into something a friend of a friend promised would double every 3 months.... more »

Forbes - 7 questions to test your financial literacy
|
| |
Great, short, informative article. I can’t tell you how many times I run into #3 and have to explain the difference between a container and what one puts into a container. And, given where I live and work, how many people have *way* too much tied up in company stock (#5), and often it’s in the form of highly leveraged positions (ie. options)... more »

REITs, the false nirvana for yield?
|
| |
Reits are showing great yields and cap gains in this slow recovery with extended low mortgage rates. But what are the pluses and pitfalls in this environment? For example I hear there is some complex rule about holding too much REIT in an IRA can trigger a large tax which you wouldn't get if held in non-ira.... more »
