COLORADO SPRINGS � This tax-averse city is about to learn what it looks
and feels like when budget cuts slash services most Americans consider
part of the urban fabric.
More than a third of the streetlights in Colorado Springs will go dark
Monday. The police helicopters are for sale on the Internet. The city is
dumping firefighting jobs, a vice team, burglary investigators, beat cops
� dozens of police and fire positions will go unfilled.
The parks department removed trash cans last week, replacing them with
signs urging users to pack out their own litter.
Neighbors are encouraged to bring their own lawn mowers to local green
spaces, because parks workers will mow them only once every two weeks. If
that.
Water cutbacks mean most parks will be dead, brown turf by July; the
flower and fertilizer budget is zero.
City recreation centers, indoor and outdoor pools, and a handful of
museums will close for good March 31 unless they find private funding to
stay open. Buses no longer run on evenings and weekends. The city won't
pay for any street paving, relying instead on a regional authority that
can meet only about 10 percent of the need.
"I guess we're going to find out what the tolerance level is for
people," said businessman Chuck Fowler, who is helping lead a private
task force brainstorming for city budget fixes. "It's a new day."

However, it is an encouraging breath of fresh air. A city actually doing the
fiscally responsible thing and cutting costs when unable to make the budget
rather than relying upon pumping up the taxes in order to pay for "bread and
circuses". It's a bitter pill to swallow, but IMO in the end the residents
and the city will be the stronger for it as they look to address and reduce
unnecessary and irrelevent costs. As the fat is trimmed away and the budget
slimmed down to real necessities, those services which are actually required
can be supported more easily, and those that can't willl be put on hold, as
they should be. Perhaps this step will also generate the necessary drive for
the residents to address and take action about any illegal immigrant
population that may exist. As people, employers and businesses find them
less attractive as neighbors, employees, workers and customers, there will
be economic, political, social and even legal pressure put on them to leave.

Probably because they aren't. Colorado Springs is a military city, as
all of the
soldiers were deployed, they lost a lot of sales tax revenue. As all
of the Focus
on the Family outfits crashed and burned, they lost both sales tax and
real estate
taxes. Because they are the most right-wing city in the state (who
would NEVER
allow illegals, btw) they refuse to raise taxes.

That free k-12 needs to end. There is absolutely NOTHING in the
constitution that says illegals have a right to any education. But in 1982

Perhaps, but when your customers start taking it personally and refusing to
do business with you, or other businesses no longer which to look the other
way and start kicking up a fuss, or people inform on you to INS (ask several
business owners who were recently charged with illegal aid and sheltering of
illegal aliens if that is an empty threat), then the risk to your business
becomes too high to justify the nominal cost savings.
