My question is pretty broad, as the information on government websites
is really confusing and unclear, so any answers would be greatly
appreciated.
Basically, I live in Seattle, WA, USA, and my girlfriend of three years
lives in Vancouver, BC, Canada. We would like to live in the same place
(I would be the one moving to Vancouver) but have had a really hard time
finding information about what it would take for that to be possible.
We don't understand whether getting married would allow me to move to
Canada, or whether we would have to get married and then still aply for
citizenship and wait for that to go through, or whether there is
something like a "fiance visa," or what. The immigration site on
Canada's government website says something about spouses sponsoring
each other having to have lived together for a year, but how can I have
lived with her for a year if she hasn't even sponsored me yet?
Furthermore, browsing around at information on various sites including
this one, I see stuff about permanent residents who haven't actually
immigrated to Canada, and even things suggesting that one has to have
lived in Canada as a permanent resident for a certain amount of time
before being able to immigrate in the first place?
Basically my questions are as follows:
What is the least I have to do to move to Vancouver to live with my
girlfriend?
What is the first step?
What is the sequence?
I don't qualify as a skilled worker or student or anything like that,
so I'm not asking about various immigration options like that, I'm
asking about how to immigrate as a spouse or fiance or partner or
whatever.
Much thanks in advance for any answers and sorry if these questions
seem stupid (maybe I'm just allergic to goverment websites.)

indeed he is not. His signature states "Authorized Immigration Consultant"
What is your point?
I arrived in Canada from the UK in 2003 and have a free information
website for immigration - http://www.onestopimmigration-canada.com
that may help. (I'm not a consultant or lawyer!)
Most immigration consultants/lawyers will give a free assessment and
I'd say that would be worth trying to get some background information.
The rules do seem confusing - but check out the spousal application
from oversea's as common law partners are now included. try this link:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/fc.html
My sister in law is english and she married her canadian husband in the
UK before ever setting foot in Canada so if you're thinking of marriage
then thats a possibility.
Whichever route you go can you let me know how you get on so I can post
it on the site to help other people?
Good luck
Dave
