Working in Adelaide

Adelaide as I have a young family and do not want to live in a huge
city. We are both IT workers (traditional, not web designers) with lots
of analysis/ programming/testing experience.
I have been told that prospects for IT workers in Adelaide are grim (and
a browse through the vacancies seems to confirm this.) But we're a year
off moving - and the market may change.
My husband or myself will have to find a job to survive - but which
occupations are best for Adelaide? Is there a market for teaching
english as a foreign language there?
What about practical jobs (painting, decorating, plumbing etc?)
Any positive comments would be gratefully received!

It's a terrible thing, because it *is* a nice place to live. BUt it's
also stagnant.
The Govt is sort of trying, but the distance and timezone are a
problem. SHouldn't be, but are.
In other words... don't bet on it getting any better.

Not really, as most immigrants go elsewhere.

To be a plumber you have to have the appropriate quals, if you have
those them I guess there's work of some kind, usually is. But how
much? Ditto painting/decorating, I doubt there's a lot because
there's not a lot of building going on.
I love Adelaide, BUt every time I visit, the people who live there
tell me the same thing. It's stagnant. THere are some new things,
but very very few.
Go to Melbourne. It's smaller than Sydney, still vaguely livable.
THen you can visit Adelaide and get a feel. Network a bit, see if
jobs come up. I really do recommend against going there first unless
you have a good cash cushion. Even though it's cheap to live there,
there's bugger all work.

No quals needed to set up a painting business.

Other than all of the new inner city apartments, and several new housing
estates in the Hills since the freeway tunnel was completed :-)
