Our problem is that we don't know whether we can score enough points to get
in on a general skills visa based on current experience or whether I should
go back to an old career or retrain, and try again in a couple of years? My
partner has been on extended maternity from her job as an Occupational
Therapist - we narrowly missed the opportunity to use her work experience by
a month i.e. she would have needed to be working twelve out of the previous
eighteen months. We missed our chance because of some innapropriate advice
that was given to us by an immigration lawyer in London. We only found out
the mistake when visiting the DIMA offices in Sydney on our most recent
trip. I am currently working in Web Marketing (40/50 points, I think) - an
area currently experiencing a high number of redundancies. Historically I
have worked as a qualified Painter and Decorator (60 points) - and really
disliked the job. However if it meant that it would get us in then I would
go back to it. Alternatively, I have found a computing course that would be
relatively quick to complete and it would also give us 60 points.
Does anyone know of a good immigration lawyer that could sit down with us
and advise which would be the best route to take. We need to make this
decision soon as we are both in our late thirties and on the verge of losing
more points. We also want to think about more children, which will mean my
partner on maternity leave again.
If a computing course is quick to complete, and subject to your computing
work experience, it is unlikely to get you an ACS assessment and 60 points.
Can you give me more details on your work history and the prospective
course? But I think your best strategy is to go back to painting and
decorating :-( for 12 months - but that also depends on your qualifications
and work history in that area - can you give me some details re. that.
Either post on the NG or if you like email me direct.
